Tipping question - hair & makeup trials

Sara, on October 3, 2017 at 6:56 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 20

For hair and makeup trials, do you tip as if it were a regular appt? Just trying to plan ahead! Thanks y'all!

My stylist didn't charge me for my trial, so I tipped her what I would normally tip her to sit in her chair. She refused but I made her take it.

I tipped $10 for each. I wasn't sure and that seemed reasonable. Hair was $50 and makeup was $95 for the trial, both before the tip

Short answer, yes. Gratuity was actually included in my case, but the lady who did my trials was so awesome that I tipped her again.

I'm going to. You're taking up their time and chair for that trial and they should be paid just like any other time you'd take up their chair. Trials take longer (usually) than if you're just getting your hair cut or something so you're preventing them from having other customers during a longer than normal time and preventing from making money

I didn't tip just because she tried to charge me $50 EXTRA on top of her already steep fee because SHE took too long

The price of my trial included tip...so I had no choice.

Even if the price didn't include tip I probably would have tipped them anyway.

For my first trial, I tipped 15% of half of the total cost. I don't anticipate having another trial before the wedding although my HMUA offered at no additional charge if I wasn't satisfied with the look (I wouldn't have tipped for this). I plan on tipping the remaining amount for day of services.

i.e. $20 tip after my first trial & $25 for my day-of services

Of course you tip. They are taking time from their schedule to work on you, trial or not. I am appalled at the people who answered no to this question.

ETA: Your stylists are going to remember you didn't tip..... do you really think they're going to go all out on the day of to make sure you are perfect? You could have a stylist who holds a grudge and is a petty betty. Just sayin, something to think about.

Your hair and make up people could be earning money and/or tips instead of working on you so yes, you tip. My hair and makeup was done by the same person and my trial alone cost $150. I tipped 20% or $30. I only had one trial and a 3-4 hour time slot to get everything right.

Thanks y'all! I've got a package that tip isn't included so I think I'm going to go @AKulina's route.

What? I thought you were supposed to tip! I tipped 20% for all my trials! (and I had 3 makeup trials until I found the right MUA) so... $$$!!!

Definitely tip! Even if your trial is included in the package! My trial took 3 hours! And to not give her anything seemed so rude!!

Also, like some one else said, this is the person that will be doing your hair and makeup day of and do you really want them to remember that you didn't tip them after a couple hour long trial!? I ended up just giving her a $20 for the trial and tipped her 15% for services day of.
