Tipping Photographer

Gabby, on September 9, 2019 at 12:02 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 13
I just read an article on here about tipping vendors. It said it is not necessary to tip them if they own their own business. Is this true?

As a photographer, tips are ALWAYS welcome, but we typically include anything cost wise into our pricing. So it isn't mandatory at all to tip us.
But for other vendors that have to do set up or wait around for things to get going and aren't essentially "working" yet, definitely tip.

If you want to tip, how much should I tip?

Thank you! That makes sense! I will still probably tip her just as a thank you.

I read $100-200 for the photographer.

It's customary to do 10%-20% but I'm of the belief that depending on the type of vendor, it's truly up to you.

And you will likely make them even more happy with it! Trust! After standing on your feet and running around nonstop, all you want is a happy client and a nap lol a tip will definitely help ease aching feet

It's true that it's not required or expected, but I would still tip for good service. I would also wait until you receive your photos to tip.

I would not tip the owner of a business. We didn’t tip our photographer for this reason (but we did tip her assistant).

Our photographer is doing our engagement session also (included in package) should we tip at the engagement session too or a nice little gift?

Even still, it isn't necessary and will likely be a welcomed surprise. Giving them a small thoughtful gift (ex. They mentioned they're a Starbucks lover so you treat them to a cup, etc) goes pretty far, especially since your wedding will still be yet to come. Honestly, anything that betters the bond between y'all is great, because the better your photographer understands you, the more YOU there is in your photographs. So, bless them! Seriously, they'll love you for it.

That's sorta weird. Most second shooters or assistants do a fraction of the work and often don't invest the same amount financially or time wise. Totally up to you who you give your money to, but while assistants are extremely helpful in making things run more smooth, it's usually the primary shooter who carries by far the largest load. Tips typically go to them and they share.
