Tipping makeup artist when paying by Paypal

Krysta, on July 28, 2019 at 3:22 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 6
This seems like a silly question, but I just don't know what to do. My makeup artist is self-employed and accepts payment by PayPal, Venmo, cash, or check. For PayPal and Venmo she isn't registered as a business and doesn't send an invoice, you just send money like you would to a friend. I will be paying and tipping both at the trial and on the wedding day.

If I pay with PayPal or check, is it appropriate to include her tip in the PayPal or check payment, since it is going directly to her as the business owner? Or is it better to do a separate cash tip?

Cash is always appreciated since fees won't come out (which I'm not sure if they do anyway with a fam/friend transaction). It's nice to have cash in hand and now wait for it to hit the bank, etc.

But honestly, a tip is a tip and I'm sure it won't matter too much how they get it.

I would probably tip cash, as that’s usually the most accepted form of tips. But if it’s easier to just do it through PayPal I don’t think it’s a huge issue. I might mention it when You pay so that she knows you didn’t just not tip her.

Thanks for all the input! Paypal and Venmo don't have any fees for sending money to a friend. The awkward thing for me is that if I tip with cash and pay with any other method, I don't know what to say when giving her the tip. The standard "This is for you" doesn't seem right since she's self-employed and I'm paying her directly.

Based on your replies, I think I'm just going to pay and tip with cash. Bohobride19 is right that you can't go wrong with a cash tip, and then I can just do the standard "Keep the change."

I always pay my hairstylist via Venmo and just add 20% to the total as her tip. My HMUA required that final payment be made before the wedding day so on the day itself I had a thank you card with cash inside for her tip and gave it to her after she was done.
