Tipping dj after ending reception early?

on October 25, 2020 at 9:19 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 10
Looking for some advice! Our wedding was last night. We originally booked our DJ for 5 hours. A few weeks before the wedding we asked him to play a half hour longer, and paid for the extra half hour ($100) Our wedding ended up ending at 9:30, instead of the planned 10. Which is where he stopped playing. So we really didn’t need the extra time.

My question is do we still need to tip him, or would it be rude to tell him to use that extra $100 for the tip instead of asking for a refund?
Thanks in advance!

How much was your DJ altogether? Does he own his own company? Only asking to see if $100 would be enough tip. Our DJ worked for a company so we tipped him based on a percentage of the cost.

We paid $1,345. He does work for a company. We just didn’t know how to go about that extra money we paid for the time that didn’t get used

Well if he works for a company, I doubt that $100 is going to him. It’s going to the company. I don’t think the company is going to give him that complete $100. He’s an employee that probably works by the hour and tips. You can probably ask the company if you can use the money paid for the unused time towards his tip, but I’m not sure how many companies would actually do this.

I wouldn't think you'll get money back -- it's not his fault the event ended early. It's not really "extra money," but it was the cost of the time you contracted with him for. It would kind of be like asking for a refund for the meals of guests who didn't show. You don't necessarily have to tip him (unless it was required by the contract), but if he did a good job and kept the guests engaged, I'd still tip him. Daughter's DJ owned the company. His contract was for $1400 and we tipped him an extra $100 because he was awesome!

I think she mentioned he works for a company. So unfortunately, the DJ may be left without a tip if she considers the unused money as his tip. Would definitely suck for the DJ especially if he did a great job. Most DJs who work for a company do get a base pay, but also heavily depend on tips to make a living. :/

Thank you! I guess my only other thing is while he otherwise did a good job, there was some issues with keeping things going smoothly, and he didn’t stick to the playlist we had talked about. We ran late taking pictures by about 10 minutes, but when we got to the reception to be announced he was not ready.. so we stood there for a bit just waiting awkwardly while the coordinator tracked him down. He also didn’t immediately go into the first dance some so groom and I kinda stood there a few seconds awkwardly 😬

Yeah, I agree with you. I don't think the "unused" time should or would count as a tip. He/the company was contracted for a period of time and he should get paid for that regardless; I'd be very surprised if there are any refunds because the event ended early -- he was there and ready to perform his duties. Personally, I'd also agree about tipping him. (But in a recent post the OP mentioned he kind of messed up some important issues, so I could potentially understand if she thinks that should impact the tip amount.)

you contracted with him to play until 10. like someone above said, it's not his fault it ended early. it would definitely be rude to tell him to use the $100 for a tip. tip him something additional based on how satisfied you were with his services.

In that case, no tip since he didn't stick to what was requested of that he agreed during your interview that he would. Bad service should *never* be rewarded in any way. Make sure to write an honest review to warn future brides via all sites (WW, Yelp, GoogleMaps, etc)
