Tipping and Service charges

BrideToBe89, on June 30, 2017 at 12:38 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 7

I am confusing myself with everything i am reading on tipping. My venue charged a heft 21% service charge. Am i expected to then tip on top of this? If so how much more? What is the service charge for if not for tip lol?

Also tipping for other vendors - your florist? I typically wont see them on my wedding day except upon delivery. Do i tip them? If so is it just delivery tip like $20 or a percentage of the total bill?

Photo/video/dj - is tipping expected? Again i read different amounts from $100 each to a percentage of the total bill.

What do you think?

The service charge is the venue's tip. Here's a link to a prior WW chat on tips. http://boards.weddingbee.com/topic/21-service-fee-and-tipping-venue-wait-staff/

If your venue is providing your food, the service charge is not their tip. It would be called gratuity if so. You should tip your dj, videographer, and photographer for a job well done because they are providing a service. I did not tip my florist or baker. HMUA and officiant, yes.

No, the service charge is often NOT a tip. That isn't correct. You need to check with your venue as it varies. Often the service charge is used to pay the staff's salaries. It is not gratuity. It is nice to tip servers on top of that. A flat amount of $25-$50 per server is fine.

Definitely ask your venue if the servers get a cut of that 21%. I'm willing to bet they don't.

You need to ASK the venue if the service charge includes gratuity. It varies from venue to venue. There is no standard answer. As the poster above said, some places it's used for wages. At my last workplace, service did cover grat. You don't want to stiff the staff if it's not included, nor do you have want to overpay if it is. The only way to know is to ask the question.
