Tip the second photographers

fsumissa, on February 14, 2017 at 8:06 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 12

This seems like a silly question but trying to make sure I have everything ready. Our photographer has her own business and is bringing in a second photographer. We tip the second photographer right? 20% of out total photography package? I was talking with FH about it ans we do a lot of fishing trips, so he said of course because we always tip the first mates. They help but they don't own the business...

Regardless of who owns the business, that has nothing to do with anything. The owner gets the profit, but also the stress, liability, and expenses. I've never heard of a 20% tip for a photographer, and i don't know if there is a standard. I think anything for both of them would be greatly appreciated. Very kind of you to ask. Smiley smile

I'd like to know this too. My photographers are husband and wife so I wasn't expecting to tip both.

I don't believe you need to tip your vendors 20%. I have seen online that the typical tip is $100 per vendor and if they own their own business then you don't tip. But for hair and makeup you do tip 20%. I have seen a few tipping guides online

Definitely tip the owners. Your fee for them covers all the overhead costs for their business, including paying the staff. A lot of owners pay themselves last. The tip is a thank you for their service and having a business shouldn't limit them of it. I would tip at least $100 for the lead photo and $75 for the second shooter. We have a photographer friend and they said that's the standard. The most she (the owner) has gotten was $150 but that was without a second shooter.

We are having the lead photographer, 2nd photographer and an assistant. Gonna do $100 for each of the photographers and $40-$50 for the assistant

Natalie, I agree that amount is more than generous. But whoever spews out the rubbish about the business owner being the exception needs a pen jammed in their neck. Bottom line, who provides the service and did they go above and beyond for you? That's like if the restaurant manager has servers call in sick and they fill the gaps, and you don't tip them because they're the manager.

I hate that bullshit about not tipping a business owner. THEY PROVIDED A SERVICE! You tip them no different than if they just worked for the company.

Couldn’t agree more, you should tip a small business - they have way more overhead and end up investing most of the profits back into their company and pay themselves last...

I disagree with PPs who say to tip regardless of if they own the business or not. I really can’t see myself tipping the owners of a business when they control the cost. My “thank you” will be a bunch of 5 star reviews at various websites and a handwritten thank you note.

Obviously you can tip employees who don’t own the business, but I’m not tipping the owners (husband and wife team)

Yeah, the provided a service that they provide the costs for. UNLIKE someone like a server or a barista or anyone whose wages are determined by the owner.
