Tip caterer and servers??

Jenni, on April 9, 2018 at 9:12 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 6
Hey guys!

So I’m finding mixed info for tipping catering. So I’m confused if I need to tip the caterer 15-25% of the bill, then on top of that tip each of the servers and the chef that work for the catering company on top of the gratuity? Or do I just do one or the other? The tip isn’t included in the catering bill so we are trying to figure out what to do. I don’t want to stiff anyone, but I’m also trying to not go into our marriage in debt as well!

Working in the business, it's been my experience that you tip on the total, then it is up to the "head person/owner" to split the tip amongst the help. I've also had the bride/groom give extra if they wanted, but wasn't expected!

I would do one or the other. I would tip the overall service and they will split it among the staff.

I would choose one or the other, usually it is one large tip discoursed by the company, from history working in the industry. If you want to be sure though shoot your caterer an email and ask their preferred method for handling gratuities.

I would not tip the owner of the catering company. I would tip the waiters and bartenders a flat fee, $20-$30 each.

I would ask the caterer what is typical since they do not include gratuity. I would recommend one lump sum and they can divvy it amongst themselves. Bartenders should have a tip jar that they will collect from.
