Tiny Bride + Dress Frustration

Sylvia, on July 8, 2020 at 9:58 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 17

Hi all!

I need some help before I begin thinking about wedding dresses. Yes, I know going to a bridal shop will help this process to try on everything, but right now that's not a possibility for obvious reasons. Plus it's a personal concern of mine health-wise.Smiley atonished

So, I am turning to you lovely brides for help!

I am a very short and petite bride... (4'11, 125lb) no curves, flat as a board.. and finding any type of dress has been a frustrating and daunting task.. wedding dress shopping will be a nightmare for me and I don't want it to be! Smiley cry

Based on my body type, which styles would you think would best flatter me? Silhouette, neckline, sleeves, etc..

Any advice, ideas, help, pep-talks would be very appreciated!

Thank you!

You can try azazie try at home program!
It’s kind of hard to tell because for instance one style might look better on you than you think. But I feel like A line is a safe style overall across the board in body types

A sweetheart neckline would look nice on you! Personally, I would try strapless too. I tried this dress on and loved it, but thought it was better suited for a very petite woman, not my curvy figure lol

Good luck and let us know what you end up getting!

So you are built just like my tiny daughter! She’s only 18 but we ran into similar issues when looking for prom dresses. Recently one of the bridal salons I follow posted this dress which is like the bridal version of the dress she wore for prom- it is so pretty and would look beautiful on a tiny bride! I’d say a sweetheart neckline and either a mermaid, fit n flare, or a line for the silhouette! You’re going to be surprised at how beautiful you look in the right dress!

I am 4”7 and almost 90lbs. It was frustrating to try dresses because I look ridiculous on most of them. I feel like everything looks flattering when the torso is long, since it will show more curves.

I was suggested a-line, and nothing was wow. It drowns me, making me look even shorter than I am. I never like sheath-mermaid until I tried one. So, I go with that. I think you have to try them, no way you can see the dress and think which one you look better at. When I saw the picture of my dress I said no! But I randomly picked it from 17 other dresses at bridal store and I was frustrated with the a-line, so I just give it a shot and fall in love with it. I haven’t reveal my sheath-mermaid dress yet, but this picture bellow was my second choice. Tiny Bride + Dress Frustration 6

Yeah! Another 4’11” girl!! Except i am 154lbs and curvy but used to be so skinny (seems you hit 25 and your metabolism goes down hill FAST!)
Anyways, A-line, sheath, Fit n flare, ... personally i dont like how dresses look on me most of the time, so i ordered a custom 2 piece skirt and bodice, sweetheart neckline, and cold shoulder sleeves, ankle length sheath skirt .. (if u have seen lord of the rings Arwen’s white bridge dress as a 2 piece with much shorter sleeves) and i asked for pockets in the skirt

A-line and a loose fit & flare might give you the best silhouette but not swallow your petite frame.

Don’t stress too much about the sleeves because they can usually be altered: add spaghetti straps or swag sleeves to a strapless dress, make long sleeves into cap or 3/4 sleeves, etc.
    Happy shopping!

You're petite, but I wouldn't say you're flat as a board! I think a fit and flare would look lovely on you. Honestly though, whenever you feel comfortable going to a store, my first bridal appointment was great because my consultant pulled a lot of different dresses in multiple styles and necklines so I could get a sense of what things looked like. I have to say, bridal gowns fit so differently from any other dresses I ever bought (I skipped prom, so maybe that experience may be similar). As a PP mentioned, Azazie has goof quality dresses and allows home try on. I would pick a few (I think you can only do 3) that speak to you in pictures and give them a shot.

I’m 5’ 2.5” and around 125lbs. This is an Oleg Cassini XTCWG808 in a size 8. I’m holding it in the back because it’s a size too big.

I'm 5'1", and this is how my A-line dress looked after alterations, which the seamstress said gave it more of a loose fit and flare style, in case this helps you visualize what that looks like on a petite bride. The right alterations really make all the difference, I also feel that the corset back helped give me more of a shape. If you want to give the ladies a boost, a sweetheart neckline would emphasize them (I don't have one on my dress).

Bottom line, you're going to look great in your dress! Good luck, hope the feedback helps Smiley smile

I’d stay away from Ball gowns. I suggest you do a lines and mermaids and trumpet style dresses

Gir, I see a bit of curve that can be accentuated there! There’s some hip and a cute booty.

I’m 5’, 120 and while I have a bit more hip - we are pretty similar. I’d say no to ballgowns.

I’d try some fitted styles - trumpet, sheath - because they can help draw you in and create curves. The most frustrating part of dress shopping was that none of the hems were even close and I was stepping all over them.
Now that I’ve committed to alterations - wow the right length hem makes a huge difference. Try to stand on a pedestal when doing try ons because that will help you visualize how the dress should lay. Also keep an eye on where the waist hits you. It’s an expensive area to get altered so try to pick a dress that hits you at the smallest part of the waist.

Oh, I’d also add to go for something with a high neckline or straps to elongate. Not strapless. That tends to cut more petite bodies off.

In my experience sleeveless or 3/4 sleeves looked the best (I didn’t go with sleeves but tried some on). Cap sleeves can look a bit juvenile and long sleeves can overwhelm.

While this dress was a size too small for my wide hips, it was everyone’s favorite of the like 20 I tried on and asked for input on. Was too cost prohibitive to get altered Smiley sad
