Timing of First Dance

Danielle W., on May 21, 2015 at 12:35 AM Posted in Planning 0 13

I am trying to come up with a timeline of the reception and was wondering at what point is everyone doing their first dance, toasts, and cake cutting. We have a later wedding start time so instead of first dance right away after introductions we were thinking about our first dance later on. Maybe as a way to open the dance floor and people can eat quicker. Toasts mid-dinner but still unsure on cake cutting. When are you doing these items for your wedding? If your even having them.

Our first dance came right after being introduced. Then, the dance floor was opened up to everyone. The dances with our parents were later on in the evening. Our DJ took the reins for the timing of everything. We just went with the flow.

Ours will be after we are introduced. Mainly because after that will be dinner and we are having a mariachi band play during dinner but the last 15-10 minutes will be of them playing our father/daughter and mother/son songs. I think toasts will be after all of that and then dance floor will be opened and about an hour later we will be cutting the cake. Our dj was incredible and helped us come up with our schedule!

Our ceremony was at 5, with cocktail hour from 5:30-6:30. introductions at 6:45 Dinner from 6:45 to about 7:40 speeches and table touches from 7:40 to 8, First dance at 8 followed by open dancing, cake cutting at 8:30, more dancing for the rest of the evening. Personally, I'm not a fan of toasts/speeches DURING dinner because the reality is no one is going to be chowing down while someone is talking (it's just awkward) so then you're forced to stop eating and pay attention meanwhile your food is getting cold. As a guest it's considered polite to wait til the cake is cut to leave if you plan on leaving early. So for that reason I would say not to wait too late to do so

We are also doing our first dance right after our big entrance. FH & I take ballroom dancing, and he always hates it at other weddings when we can't dance to the music during dinner (which is when they play all the Foxtrot-style music) because the bride & groom haven't danced yet. So he wanted to do our dance first so that others could dance during dinner if they want to.

We're skipping the whole big entrance (just not our thing). We're doing speeches split up inbetween courses and first dances after dinner to open up the dance floor (830/9pm- ish)

First dance was right after introductions, speeches were during dinner. cake cutting was at the tail end of dinner because we were running behind.
