Timeline for Name Change and Moving to a New State

Kelly, on May 25, 2016 at 10:28 AM Posted in Planning 0 5

Hi ladies and gents!

FH and I are moving to a new State about a week and a half after the wedding. I'm taking his last name, but I'm not sure when to start the process. Should I initiate the name change during our last few days in Virginia or should I wait until we move to Florida so I can change my name and get a new license all at the same time?

Has anyone navigated this particular situation before?

Thanks!

I would think it would be easiest to get your new SS card before you change states (maybe even mandatory) but the rest you could do in your new state. If you mail in your SS card name change, perhaps you can have it forwarded (or just sent to family in VA to send on to you).

I'd wait and get it all done at the same time when you are in your new state. I wasn't in that particular situation, but I don't see any need to do it immediately. I just went through the process a couple of weeks ago and we were married in January. It'll take a week or two for your new license and SS card to come in the mail anyway, so by that time you'll be at your new address. There's probably a bigger chance of those getting lost somewhere during the mail forwarding process, so I'd definitely wait just because of that...you don't need a greater chance of your SS card floating around out there!

Check the requirements for FL. I had to produce all kinds of info just to renew my license a couple of years ago.

Check into what each state requires. Where I live, once the license is filed, you go to the ROD that day (if it's not too late in the day) and pick it up. You can go to the SSA that day and file a new SS card. They give you a "receipt" and you can take that to the DMV as soon as the next business day to get a new DL. It really depends on where you live or, in your case, are going to live. Depending on what your current state says, I would at least go to the SSA & DMV before you move and then worry about changing bank accounts and whatnot after.

I moved to Florida a couple years ago...you'll love it! Wait until you move to get a new driver's license. Most Florida DMV's print your license there so you can take it with you right away. You'll need proof of SSN, 2 items that have your new address on it, and your current ID. Everything else you can start right away. Your marriage license will have your new last name on it, so that's often what you'll need for documentation. If you have your new address, use that for all name-change related forms. Also....get your new driver's license before you register your car in Florida so all that paperwork can have your new name on it.
