Hi all,

So we're trying to save a bit on the reception (aren't we all?), and one thing the venue planner suggested was to only have a 3 hour open bar. Our ceremony and reception are in different locations. The ceremony ends at 5:00pm, and I'm expecting guests to arrive at the reception venue around 5:30. We will arrive at 6, and dinner will be from about 6:15 - 7:15. We have the space until 10:00pm, when the DJ will start to pack up. With this in mind, do you have any suggestions for the the 3 hour period of time where we will have the open bar available?

I hate to do this, but this cuts about $1,000 from the total cost so I think it's needed!

From my experience from talking with our bartenders for the day they suggested we stop serving or do "last call" an hour before we need to get out of the venue. But because of were my venue is located the nearest hotels for the guests are 30 minutes away. It gives them time to sober up before driving basically. So you could stop serving by 9 pm which cuts out an hour there. But that only depends on your venue location. For example if you were in a hotel that most guests are staying at or within walking distance to their hotels it wouldn't make since to end it so early. I think serving from 6 to 9 would be fine for your 3 hours.

We are doing this. We have 3 hours of open bar. Our first hour of cocktail hour will be open bar. Open bar will be closed for dinner and then reopen for another two hours while dancing. We are going to have a big sign letting everybody know, but I don't see why people hate on it so much.
