Tiered Cake vs Cupcakes?

Jillian, on June 10, 2016 at 2:59 PM Posted in Planning 0 28

We're going to our cake tasting next week, so I'm starting to get ideas about our wedding cake! I know we still have time, but I'm trying to decide whether we would want a 3 tier cake or a cupcake tower with a small one tier cake on top. What are you guys doing? And do you have any reasons for choosing one over the other?

I like cake, i thought about doing a two tire one for cutting during the reception and the other for our one year anniversary. I also would be doing cupcakes. There is no reasoning for what i chose to do.

We're doing a three or four tier cake (depending on the final guest count). I love cupcakes, but they just didn't scream "wedding" for me.

My advice: bring pictures of what you like and be honest with the bakery. There are so many designs to choose from! Have fun!

I think we're doing a 1 tier with various dessert offerings staged around the cake Smiley smile

As for 1-tier+cupcakes vs. cake only, we're not hardcore cake people and we love all kinds of desserts and would love to have variety Smiley smile

I plan on having a small cake on top of a cupcake tower with lots of mini cupcakes. My reason for this is so that it is convenient for the guests to just grab and go. No messy cutting or wasted cake to pack. I find it much easier. Mini cupcakes often get devoured by my family lol. FH and I will just have the cake on top to traditionally cut and share. They would also be able to pick their choice of cupcake flavor.

I just commented on an identical thread today, but cupcakes are almost always disgusting at weddings. They dry out so fast. 100% cake.

I am in camp no cupcakes.

Wedding cake is fancier than other cakes and cupcakes are cupcakes. Great at a birthday but not as good or as fancy as wedding cake

I originally thought of having cupcakes until I meet a baker at a bridal expo. She specializes in both and had a literal sit down talk with me about her opinion. She explained that everyone has cupcakes for every occasion and how special a wedding cake is. Having a beautiful tiered wedding cake on display for everyone to see only happens once! Vs. cupcakes you can have dor birthdays, showers and fiestas. She opened my eyes and was so passionate about it that I completely changed my mind. This is also coming from someone who bakes as a hobby and is in love with all things sweet!

We are doing a small tiered cake for us to cut and cupcakes for the guests. It is all about what you want though... it is your wedding! Smiley smile

We're doing a small cutting cake atop a cupcake tower. Frankly, it came down to cost. Cupcakes with our baker actually cost only a little less than cake per slice, but when you add the cake cutting fee and delivery fees, it adds up fast. We can pick them up and set them up the morning of easily, whereas I would never DREAM of trying to transport and assemble a multi tier cake myself. Delivery would be an extra $100, then cutting was $1.50 per spice x 75 people... no thanks. Our baker has great reviews for both cake and cupcakes, so I'm confident in their ability to make them delicious. Plus, I found gorgeous wrappers and liners, and they are frosted to look like different flowers. ... I'm not worried about them not looking special enough or wedding-y enough. They'll be gorgeous. Smiley smile

Cupcakes logistically may make more sense for some events - I just don't like them. I vote tiered cake!

Doing a tiered cake because it's included with the venue.

We did a tiered cake. I was going for a classic/elegant feel. Cupcakes are trendy, and I'm not big on trendy.

I'm doing both. I mostly just don't want to share my cake so I'm going to save the biggest tier for myself (and I guess FH.. but mostly me) and guests can have cupcakes and the top two tiers.. there will be 2x the amount needed anyway lol. I'm a HUGE cake lover clearly.

I'm doing cupcakes because they are easier since they don't need cutting. That is the main reason. And I'm not going for fancy. This is a backyard picnic style reception.

Personally I prefer a traditional wedding cake. I think it looks more elegant and honestly you can have cupcakes any time but a real wedding cake you only get one shot at.

I'm going to get a small cake for us to cut and then I'm getting buntinis from "nothing bundt cakes" not sure if that place is big or even exists outside of Oregon but I LOVE their cakes. Not very fancy but oh-so delicious.

Cupcakes are fine, but personally I don't prefer cupcake towers. If you're going to do them, jus display them on trays at staggered heights.
