Tiaras. Tacky or elegant?

Jessica, on March 19, 2019 at 1:37 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 33
So I was considering wearing a tiara for my wedding, it's Victorian themed and my fiance proposed to me outside Buckingham palace.Even though it's Victorian themed, we have definitely been in a super careful to not have any cheese or tacky elements to the wedding. It's all very elegant and a modern take on Victorian, including my dress. I'm curious on wearing tiaras on your wedding day. Is it to pageant Queen and tacky? Or do you think it can be elegant and classy? Including pictures of me in my dress and the tiaras I am looking at.

Personally, I'm not a fan of the ones that look like crowns. I do like the sparkly headbands though.

BUT! This is a super personal choice. If you love it and feel beautiful, go for it!

I love it. There’s a right and a wrong way to do it. The right way is a bit more expensive unfortunately but the style you picked out seems elegant.

I agree with Nemo. Personally, I find it sort of "costume-y" -- unless the wearer is literally a princess -- like Kate or Meghan -- but, that's just my opinion. If you're going for a classy/vintage feel, I agree a more subtle sparkly headband fits the bill without risking looking like the bride is trying too hard. (I'm probably biased though since daughter wore a tiara for her Sweet 16, so that will always be my association.) Also, because of the recent Royal weddings, I think the crown-like tiaras are trendy right now, but in the future will likely be a dead give-away of the year/fashion era of when the wedding took place. (Pretty much like my floral headband and giant puffy sleeves are to my late-80's wedding. I still loved them, but they definitely SCREAM 1980-something....)

I've seen tiaras worn beautifully with veils! As long as you dont get the most inexpensive ones they tend to look great! I'd go with something on the thin side compared to the wider taller ones. And I like the first one you included in your pictures!

Ok, here's my two cents worth:

    1. I don't think it's tacky, and the tiaras you've shown here are very elegant and regal, and just what you'd expect from a Victorian wedding! (love the theme, btw)

    2. I also want to wear a tiara, and had those same worries. But then it hit me: what other time/event in my life would it be acceptable to wear a tiara? Never? Ok, this is it!! This is your chance to wear one and not feel like an idiot. Go for it!!

    3. It doesn't matter what anyone/any of us think. (this is something I'm telling my daughter constantly). It only matters what you think. If you love it, do it!!!!

I love it! You'll look beautiful. Gorgeous dress and veil too!!

I don't think it's tacky...I think it can look great if done well. I've seen quite a fewy that are very classy and elegant.

I googled tiara and I think these would look great with your dress, as well:

I'm personally not a crown fan, but it does sound like it goes with your theme so if you want to wear one, go for it!

Tiaras are not my style. I want to keep it simple and classy. But the tiaras on the pictures look pretty, and not overwhelming. It is your day and wear whatever will make you feel your best.

Not my style. Sometimes I think the crown says "I took the fact that I'm a princess for the day a bit too far..."

However, I have seen tasteful headbands and really really small crowns that are quite beautiful, I'd just never wear them.

But they match your theme, which I love, so I feel like maybe if you found the right one?

Lastly, I'm a "less in more" person. Your dress is covered in busy lace, you have a veil, I think the crown is too much. Just personal preference!

For me, it takes the right tiara (a headband or low tiara worn more as a headband, or a cool quartz crystal one) or it reminds me of prom! 😝

I think the ones you chose are lovely but may be too much for that dress/veil.

Definitely seems like my unsureness is founded. The opinions I'm getting as replies are essentially both sides of my brain right now. One side says it's too much and looks too costume like, but the other side says it fits the theme and when else will I get to wear a tiara in my life? Such a hard decision. I may end up ordering both of the tiaras and trying them on with my dress and veil when I get all of them together, and judging from there. I can always return them

I think dainty tiaras are perfectly fine. Now, if you wanted a 4" high, Swarovski crystal-studded piece, that might be a little much. Ultimately, it is your call. If you feel it suits you then likely anyone who really knows you will see it fitting as well. My wedding is also Victorian themed and a celebration of our Irish heritages. So, I chose a very dainty, Celtic knot tiara. It's only about 2" high and, when all is said and done, it will likely look more like a fancy comb/clip in my hairstyle.

I also think how well this works depends on the overall vibe of the wedding. If a bride is wearing a crown, in my head, the groom better be in a full tux and the overall wedding/reception should be very formal (like I'm thinking a formal party from Downton Abbey... Smiley winking ). A bride wearing a crown/tiara and the groom wearing jeans and a vest, and the reception in a barn? To me, that screams, "I want to be a pretty, pretty princess!" -- and not in a good way.

I totally understand why you're torn. Good luck! Smiley heart

At least in that department, the groom would match! All of the groomsmen and my groom are wearing morning coats which are similar to tails. As well as double-breasted waistcoats, pocket watches and my groom will be wearing grey pinstripe pants. They will even be wearing top hats for the photos taken afterwards. It's very much so a royal wedding type look, our venue even has giant chandeliers. We definitely wanted to make sure the venue fit a Victorian theme
