Thursday Wedding! Invitation & rsvp Help!

Rhenelyn, on December 6, 2021 at 12:33 AM Posted in Planning 0 11
So, we set our date for Thursday, March 2, 2023 and I’m not exactly sure when to send out our invitations. It’s on a Thursday in Topanga Canyon, CA which is about 15 minutes away (45 depending on our wonderful traffic) from Santa Monica. Some guests may be making an hour or so drive at most (again, depending on traffic) and I feel like some people may take it as a long weekend, especially those who live a little bit farther. I’ll be reserving a block of hotel rooms for that matter but I can’t decide when to send out the invitations and when to ask for the RSVP’s as well. Our venue needs a head count a month before our date which is great, so we have plenty of time. But considering it’s a random Thursday, what would be an appropriate time for people to get the time off? We’re thinking of inviting about 80-100 guests and adults only. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I’d send out save the dates 6-9 months ahead of time and then invites like 3-4 months prior with rsvps due 1.5-2 months prior so you can give a final head count.

Do you plan on sending save the date cards? If yes, then send those out 9 months before. As for invites you should send them 4 months to get a good RSVP turn around time of 2 months before. Especially if you need a final count 1 month before. This should give enough time for your guests to start considering on what they should do so they can start thinking of options. Such as if they need to call off work, book hotels, save financially, find babysitters, etc. Smiley smile

We weren’t planning on sending out save the dates actually. Mainly to save a little bit considering our budget but also to avoid less talk around friends who don’t get invited. We really only want 80 guests, so a lot of close friends who can’t handle their liquor might not make the cut. I understand people will get hurt and all, but I’d rather have it just from the straight from when invitations get sent out rather than people talking about why someone got a save the date and another didn’t. Let me know if that makes sense! Lol.

That makes sense but I would send out save the dates to give people further notice that it is on a Thursday. If you want people to make it a long weekend I’d definitely send save the dates to give people enough time to plan and stuff.

Yeah, we didn’t want to send out save the dates to save a little extra money but also to avoid some people who aren’t getting invited from being hurt twice as much. We’re having about 80 guests and might not invite the ones who can’t control themselves properly in front of others. We’re all still close as a friend group, but not exactly as a close with each other. But if they get upset over not being invited, I’d rather have them be upset with that rather than twice over with save the dates.

Makes sense! I didn't do save the dates either for the same reason. I kept my wedding a little hush hush because we only had 50 people in total at the wedding, but the family and friends that did know about it totally understood especially everything going on with COVID.

Thank goodness I’m not the only one then! I don’t think it’ll be fully hush hush considering how close some people are to others. Hopefully feelings don’t get too hurt. So, considering no save the dates and it being on a Thursday, should I still send them out 4 months beforehand? Or maybe 6 months to have people organize everything then?

Sending wedding invitations 6 months in advance is just going to be a larger headache for you. They will get lost, people will put them aside and forget (not the wedding, but to rsvp). Many people won't know if they can commit that far out. They won't know whats happening with Covid etc... Honestly, I truly think this will wind up more work and aggravation than its worth. I would let people who are invited the date (either by a save the date, email, text , phone call etc... around 6 months out) I would send the invitations at 10 weeks with an rsvp date of 5 weeks before wedding. Gives you one week to contact anyone you haven't heard from yet.

That actually sounds like a very promising timeline! I might not send out actual formal save the dates, but I guess still a heads up kind of thing wouldn’t hurt. Thank you!

Send save the dates via traditional phone call *and* modern magnets for the fridge at 6-9 months. Employers do not grant time off prior to 4 weeks but guests will have plenty of time to request the weekend off. With 6-9 months advance notice, a Thursday should not be any different from a Friday.

Invites are sent 6-8 weeks standard. No one can commit before that. Replies are due back at 3 -4 weeks with a week buffer to contact anyone who has not replied and get accurate head count for your caterer. You don’t get in touch with anyone to confirm until the evening of the due date.
With L. A. traffic always err on the side of being generous with time.

You can give people the heads up if you'd like. That way they can start thinking about making travel arrangements, taking time off, etc. Then when the wedding invites come in that's when they can start booking stuff. You can send the invites about 3 months beforehand. Give them a month to RSVP. Then use that last month to finalize the count with your venue. Or even what PP said about 10 weeks and then 5 weeks. But just make sure to follow the timeline you need because you mentioned that the venue needs a final count one month prior to the big day.
