Throw myself an engagement party?

Daniela, on November 7, 2019 at 3:38 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 18
Engagement Parties: My parents are paying for my wedding but I want to have an engagement party to celebrate our engagement but my mom thinks its a waste of money. Is it acceptable to throw ourselves an engagement party?

I think it's fine. We didn't have one because we didn't feel the need for one, so it would've been a waste of money for us. But if you want one, it isn't a waste of money. Since it's not a gift giving event (at least where I'm from), there's nothing wrong with hosting it yourselves.

It's typically considered rude to throw any event to honor yourself.

That’s what I figured, I just really would like to have one.

It’s perfectly fine to throw an engagement party. Think about it, we throw birthday parties that celebrate ourselves?

If you really want to have one, you should have one. I don't think an engagement party is really "honoring yourselves". You're at a happy time in your life and you want to celebrate with the people you care about. As long as you're providing the food and drinks for the party, why wouldn't that be okay? I wouldn't find that rude in the slightest.

In other words.... Don’t get so caught up in the “rules” that don’t really exist (and half the world doesn’t know or care about). Just enjoy your engagement and your wedding in the way that you’d like to.

I really don't see any problem with hosting your own engagement party. We're throwing ourselves an engagement party next weekend. There's nothing wrong with being excited and wanting to celebrate with the people in your lives. I think when you have things like showers where you typically get gifts that etiquette of who throws what comes more into play.

I don't throw myself birthday parties (do people really do that?) But I also think that's an entirely different situation. If you got a promotion at work, would you throw yourself a party to celebrate?

Yes, and yes. Maybe our views on parties are different then.

I think you can absolutely throw a party for anything you want! You only get one life, so do whatever feels right in your heart 🤗 So, Daniela you should totally throw yourself an engagement party! Why the heck not!? Don’t even worry about anyone judging you! 😜 Just do this for YOU & FH ❤️

I am 100% that b (who throws herself parties). It's my birthday? Party. I get a new job? Party.

If I want something, I do not wait around for someone to do it for me.

I'm having this debate myself! I don't have a lot of friends and my coworkers are complete jerks who don't care one whit about me! My MOH is already planning a shower and bachlorette, so I'm going to throw myself an Engagement party! It's not a gift-giving party so who hosts it isn't really a problem!!

I think it's kind of tacky to throw a party for yourself like that. Just kind of seems like your starving for attention. But also, people dont' have to go if they dont' like that, so i guess do whatever you want. That's my view though.

I don't think it's tacky or attention seeking at all! We threw ourselves an engagement party last year with our closest friends and families. We had it at my fiance's parents house and we cooked the food ourselves so it was very inexpensive. Engagement is a big step and it deserves to be celebrated!

Why is it considered rude? Why do people care?
