Thoughts on wishing well at a bridal shower?

Juliet, on April 26, 2017 at 6:11 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 10

And by wishing well I mean those things sometimes shaped like an actual well you see at showers for guests to drop small kitchen gadgets into. I’m not referring to a card holder at the actual wedding where people put cards with money for the couple, which I’ve noticed some people also refer to as a wishing well.

Today my sister showed me the invitations she’s having made up for my bridal shower—I didn’t ask nor did I want to see them but she insisted she get my "approval" because she’s been doubting herself as planning isn’t really her thing—and I saw she and my mom included an insert card stating that instead of the typical wishing well gadgets, they request guests bring a small donation like a can of dog food for our local animal shelter since my FH and I are both animal lovers.

I love the idea because I don’t need people to buy me kitchen gadgets and would absolutely prefer any money people were going to spend on kitchen gadgets go towards helping animals in need, but would you as a guest be annoyed to be asked to do this? Obviously it’s not a requirement but I don’t want to ask too much of my guest since we also have a registry.

I’ve seen plenty of wishing wells at friends’ showers, usually asking for a kitchen gadgets or spices or whatever, and usually I buy a gift off the registry and bring something small for the wishing well, so I assumed this was the norm. But now that I’m the bride I’m worried that it might seem overly gift grabby since you’re kind of asking for two gifts.

I see those extra things (wishing wells, diaper raffles at baby showers, etc.) as optional, not obligatory (though I usually contribute). I love animals too so I wouldn't mind picking something up for that. I think it's a cute idea, and not gift grabby since it's not actually for you. And again, it's not mandatory.

Absolutely love this idea. I'd happily pick up some treats or cans of dog food for the wishing well plus the actual gift. I'm going to have to file this idea away from use at a later date myself lol

I've never heard of this before but I could fill it to the brim with cans of cat food that my cat doesn't like. I think it's a cute idea but I wouldn't do it for kitchen gadgets since there would probably be too many duplicates.

Love the idea! I've been to so many bridal shower where the wishing well was for unspecific kitchen items, specifically spices, or baking items. This is a refreshing idea for a great cause.

I may be going against the grain here - but I don't like the idea. It's wonderful to be charitable and I too am a crazy cat lady, but it just doesn't feel like the right time or place to be asking people to make a charitable donation, regardless of how small. I personally hate the wishing well anyway and asked my MOH not to have one.

I love the idea! I would prefer to bring dog toys and treats to donate than to bring random kitchen gadgets. I think it is really sweet of you.

I don't think you should ask for anything at your wedding.
