Thoughts on Tip Jars at the bar

So I will have an open bar at my wedding. The bartending service is stating that if I don't want to have a tip jar then it will be an additional 7% gratuity on top of the 15% in the contract. Is it tacky to have a tip jar at the wedding?

I was informed that if you have an open bar, the guests are not required to tip since you will be tipping at the end of the night yourself. I think it's appropriate for a guest to tip if THEY want to, but I wouldn't put a jar out or anything. If you do have a jar, tell the bartender to put it behind the counter so that way it isn't out if you think it's tacky. People will feel obligated to tip if a jar is out, so I wouldn't, personally.

I kinda like the idea of a tip jar. I would rather put my money in a jar and not leave it sitting on the bar. I've seen people take the money that the bartender didn't pick up right away. This way it's all in one spot.

My bartenders for my wedding require a tip jar.

No tip jar. Just pay the extra. Or try negotiating with them for 18% or 20% maybe.

Yes it's tacky. Just last night my dad mentioned to make sure there won't be tip jars at ours, I was surprised he thought of it before I did!

Aoki, because it's wrong to make people pull out their wallets at your event for any reason.

No tip jar, let the venue and bartender know that they will be given a 20% gratuity at the end of the night. That would be a way better plan. As Richard said, YOU are the customer.

I honestly don't see anything wrong with this. Your guests still won't have to pay for their beverages. As a guest, I would like to know if the bartenders are even allowed to accept additional gratuity. But this is an UO I guess.
