Thoughts on replacing zipper for corset?

Serena, on April 26, 2020 at 12:07 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 21
As I wait for state orders to be lifted to continue my alterations, I am in serious debation of having my gown converted. I am willing to pay the price if you all think it could be done and would look okay? I need support for the bust and it seems what we have tried so far isn't doing the trick. I ordered a boustier and tried it on underneath tonight. Aside from seeing it under the dress, my dress actually fit amazing! Now considering the corset back for the same feel. Even if they line the sheer to add the paneling, I'd be okay with that. Cons and pros?

Thank you!Thoughts on replacing zipper for corset? 1Dress with and without boustier....Thoughts on replacing zipper for corset? 2

1st, If you can find a good seamstress, it is possible, and she/he would do it neatly. But at this point, I would just worried that if something doesn’t look perfect, I would regret it.

2nd, the dress has patterns in the back, and that would be cut right in the middle of them.
Btw, I am not a seamstress, but I never see a semi transparent dress with a corset back. I wonder if the material is strong enough for a corset back?

If you are ok with adding a lining to the dress to make changing it to a corset, why not just have the dress lined and use a corset bra? That would be less expensive than changing the back of the dress I’d guess.
The dress is beautiful. I agree that you need the extra support to make it for a little better.

That could be an option! I'd have to find a plunged corset deep enough to not see it. With my boustier tonight, it was so noticeable under the plunge and I wouldn't want that portion lined. Would def be a cheap alternate though! Thank you!

Looks better with the boustier. If you are more confident with a corset do that. It’s to your day!

Thank you! I'm just desperate to find that secured feeling. We already added cups, took in bodice, and took in bust, but it still looks sloppy. They're going to take it in more when the store opens, but they say they can't do much more to give me the support. I already paid for straps too for the reception. So I'm leaning towards corset if that dress could pull it off. I love the looks of them anyways!

If you have the bodice e lined, they can add two things without doing the corset back. Boning, sewing little inside pockets to hold strips. And since the bustier is great, 1" down from the top of the bodice, or as far down as corset top, little pieces of Velcro, with matching ones, piece sewn to bustier, piece to inside lining. It can even have extra pieces of Velcro under the side seams , waist to midriff band of bustier. So you never get that slick fabric sliding down feeling. But do not have to pull the fragile fabric tight to hold it up. Corset fit, super snug. Dress more loosely fit, kept up by Velcro to corset, and boning.

Is her work neat? I remember she removed your dress beading for no reason. Make sure you tell her in detail to avoid any misunderstanding. Maybe even draw a picture of how you want it or find a picture from google image that best describes your idea. Like detail....

I would worry a corset back would take away from the lovely intricate pattern thats there now.

Thank you for your opinion! I think I'm leaning towards having it lined and wearing a boustier. It seems most people between WW and friends/family are preferring the zipper. I just hate to line the front plunge..

Thank you for this advice! DB refuses to add boning, at least they did in February, but I'm going to talk to them on the phone today about this option with the velcro or even using hook & eyes!

This is my gown with an ivory boustier in the back. Kind of an idea of what it would look like lined, only would be a light color Thoughts on replacing zipper for corset? 3
Then I also did a crappy edit of the idea of what a corset would look like.....

The bustier is excellent as is, if there is a lining. Which is easy. Take it from David's if they are their usual less than helpful selves. Meanwhile the lap wrinkles and funny hand, in spite of the bustier, are from lack of a slip. A nice, thin, slippery nylon tricot slip makes a smooth sheath that the dress slides back and forward over, as you twist and turn, so the fragile material is not tugged out of shape into wrinkles. Plus it keeps the skirt from falling between your legs and getting sweaty, or having pics where wind or movement plaster the dress to your two legs like a sheet around 2 tree trunks, instead of keeping a flat A shaped smooth front. And makes it float nicely as you move while dancing . Better a half slip than another skirt lining or a permanent laced corset back. A bustier and nylon tricot* slip can be removed and washed, keeping your dress nicer while wearing it, and if you want to save it to pass on , and will solve your uplift, smoothing and hang issues. * Nylon tricot absorbs, while breathing some through it's loose loop weave. Acetate or poly tricot are closer weave plastic not nylon. Hot, make you sweat more, and show it by clinging. For a $15-20 price difference, get a nylon tricot half slip, with either rows of lace ruffles or lace at the bottom. Never did say, I think it is a beautiful dress, and though I like corset backs on some dresses, the simple line, and the care taken to line up the diamond window pane pattern in the lace by the original maker, would be cluttered up with a corset lacing.

Thank you! Very informative!! I appreciate the time for you to write that out. Gives me so much more insight. I agree, I think I'm going to pass on the corset. I just have to hope my dress still fits in 5 months since my wedding was postponed...

Have cups sewn into your dress. My seamstress did this for me and it worked perfectly!
