Thoughts on not having a reception

Jessica, on June 15, 2020 at 12:07 PM Posted in Planning 0 9
Hello, the more I think about getting married the more I am debating not having a reception and just have a social instead. Has anyone else did this? Can you share your thoughts and ideas?

A lot of people skip a reception and only do cake and punch after the ceremony - is that something appealing to you?

Depends what you mean by a “social”? You do need to feed your guests if they are attending your ceremony. But it can just be casual appetizers and/or dessert, as long as you have it at a non-meal time (like 2pm-4pm, or 8pm-10pm)

What do you mean by social? It would considered rude not to feed your guests that attended your ceremony. You could do something super casual rather than fancy.

If by “social“ you mean... heavy appetizers, cake and beverages without formal seating and more of a mix and mingle vibe, then that’s definitely doable after the ceremony. Situating some taller pub tables throughout the reception area would allow guests to have a place to set their plates and cups.

Yes! My sister did this after her wedding and it was better than I expected. She did heavy appetizers, ice cream from a local shop, coffee and tea and lemonade. High-top tables so people could hover, but a row of chairs around the outside walls if someone needed to sit.

We are thinking of getting married at a private ceremony at a destination wedding. We would then have like an open house type of thing where we would serve cookies, bars, other snacks, and like a punch. We would also have a wedding cake or cupcakes.

Depending on what time you have it then that should be fine. If you have it at meal time, then you really need to serve a full meal.
