Thoughts on Dress Preservation?

Brittani, on September 9, 2020 at 9:54 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 8
I'm about to purchase my wedding dress, and the shop is offering a discount on dress cleaning and preservation if you purchase it at the same time as the dress. I'm curious to hear people's thoughts on dress preservation? What would be the purpose of getting it preserved? What do you plan to do with it in the future? What would you do with it if you don't get it preserved?

I just got my dress preserved. And honestly, I don’t know what I’ll do with it, but the thought of just balling it up and stuffing it in a closet, or just leaving it dirty (bc it does get quite dirty on the bottom from dragging around on the floor all day) just didn’t sit well w me. So for now it’s nicely preserved and displayed in a beautiful huge box for me to look at everyday and remember lol. Maybe one day I’ll give it away or sell it.

I think the theory behind it is that you could pass it on to a daughter or someone else in the future. My mom had her dress preserved and when I tried it on 25ish years later, it still looked new. If you don't have it preserved it can become discolored and the fabric will eventually start to disintegrate, but if you do have it preserved, you're basically buying yourself time in case you have a purpose for it in the future.

(It was from 1984 and while it didn't have ridiculous puffy sleeves, it was definitely an 80s dress, so neither of us thought I was going to wear it. Google 1980s wedding dresses if that didn't mean anything to you, it'll be fun.)

It depends in each person but I personally wouldn't do it. I prefer to donate or sell it to someone wbo will definitely use it and appreciate it. Both my mom and FMIL borrowed their dresses from a family member. I was hoping to do the same but my friend wants to wait to see if her daughter wants to use it. Her daughter is two years old. So I would think the earliest she can use it is in 2036.

I know what you mean about the 1980's dresses! My mom had her puffy sleeves 80's dress preserved and it's been sitting in a box in her closet for 30+ years, she's never even taken it out.

I got mine preserved for sentimental reasons. My wedding was the best day of my life and I absolutely love my dress! I definitely don't want to get rid of it, and preserving it just keeps it from turning colors over time.

My mom also saved the issue of Brides Magazine from the month she got married and it's funny to look through. Like, why did people think this was a good idea!?
