Themed reception?

Lynne, on August 12, 2019 at 6:04 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 14

I want a theme for the wedding but not so much for the ceremony. Is it crazy to have just a themed reception?

I was originally thinking Grease for the entire ceremony and reception. But the more I looked at the bridesmaid dresses the more I thought it looked too costumy (I know not a word, but it is now. HA HA HA!)

But, I want to make the reception fun. It is a BBQ. So I've thought about adding some fun outdoor games. But I am not 100% certain of what I want to do.

If it's a BBQ, I don't think you should have a grease theme. It needs to be burgers, fries shakes etc for it to be a Grease theme

That is what I was thinking too. I just don't want the reception be some lame BBQ, if that makes any sense. I want to find ways to make it fun.

My FH thought of games. My mom even suggested a slip and slide to make it even more fun. LOL! I told her no on that though.

Personally, I think there is a fine line between an all-out-theme party and a wedding with a theme. For me, a wedding is distinctly different from a themed birthday party. I think a wedding can be LOTS of fun, but still have a certain level of seriousness and decorum fitting for two people making a life-long commitment to each other. I understand times are changing and many, especially on this forum, disagree with me, and "theme weddings" seem to be very popular. But, I think having a wedding with a theme-related "vibe" is different from having an over-the-top costumed theme party. I think you can do a lovely, 50's style, without acting out the entire "We Go Together" final scene from Grease. However, that's totally just a personal preference and no disrespect is intended.

Instead of going for a full out theme, what if you just add subtle touches of the theme? For our wedding I am doing a touch of a “police theme” in honor of my future hubby being a law enforcement officer. I am having late night coffee and donut bar with little signs, a sign at the bar reading “its not a good party till the cops show up” and a photo booth with a line up back drop and police/prisoner props. The colors of my wedding will also include blue. So it will just be some subtle hits of police around, but not a full blown theme thrown in people’s faces.

These are exactly the kind of more subtle theme ideas I love! They are cute and add a little humor and fun without crossing a line. Smiley heart Pretty much everyone will get the idea of a "police theme," without having to give out handcuffs as favors! Smiley winking

Agree with this! For example, We are doing Disney Christmas as a theme and adding elements of both but not going full on costumes with Disney characters or playing Christmas music.

We aren't doing a Grease themed wedding or reception. That was our initial idea, but that changed. We will most likely not do a theme anything.

I think it would be very cool to have kind of a cool 50's nostalgia -vibe if you like that and it's meaningful to you. I love the dress you've been posting; it has a subtle vintage look. User Pirate/60's Bride had a very cool 60's Rat Pack vibe for her reception. I think you can easily have a fun, carnival/bbq style for your reception with subtle touches that give a nod to your original Grease vision, but in a classy, casual wedding way!

I agree with the other posters. I would do smaller things rather than going all out. For instance my husband's favorite hockey team is the New Jersey Devil's and their colors are black and red so they were our two primary colors which was perfect because I always wanted red roses for my wedding. We also like the Baltimore Orioles so our guestbooks were a NJ Devil's and Baltimore Devil's Jersey. Our place cards looked like hockey tickets. I love the Titanic movie so the bridal party walked down the aisle to a volin cover of My Heart Will Go On. I also love glitter/sparkles so our tables numbers, cake topper and table cloth on our sweetheart table were a sparkly silver. I wore Converses for the ceremony and he wore them for the reception since they are my favorite type of shoes. We had small things that both of us love without going over the top with anything. I think if you have too much of something it will end up looking tracty or like a child's birthday party or Halloween. I would urge you not to have a slip and slide as that sounds childish to me and most people don't attend weddings expecting to use a slip and slide so unless you want to tell everyone you are having a slip and slide and are okay with them showing up in extremely causal clothes then I definitely wouldn't do the slip and slide. However, I have been to weddings were there is cornhole or horseshoes. We had a photobooth for our wedding and everyone loved it. If you want to do a Grease theme maybe have a Grease wedding cake topper or something small like that.
