Does my theme and colors have to match?
We want our colors to be purple and aqua but We also want a theme (also not sure of a theme yet). We just don’t know if they have to match.

No. You may decorate with the season, or not. With a particular theme, or not. And you do not need a theme, other than romantic wedding.

Purple and aqua are pretty but also very bold Maybe mix in silver, gold, or pearlescent to tie it together?

You don’t need a theme if that helps. Here are a few ideas with your color scheme:

Do what you want. While many will tell you a theme is bad, not necessary, etc it actually exists at every wedding. Your theme is anything from colors, seasons, an aesthetic and beyond. It's basically how you choose to decorate. Do you want everything to mesh together cohesively or do you want complete random mishmash? Decide on your vision and go from there. Pinterest has a great starting poing with color palettes and themes. Whatever you want.

They are really pretty together but ad a cream or a ivory to soften the boldness. your theme could be wedding

They don't have to match. Mine generally kind of do, but that wasn't on purpose. Our colors are black and red and our theme is motorcycles. It works out because FH's motorcycle is black and red. However, we have plenty of friends in that community who will be coming on their bikes. Their bikes are all sorts of colors - blue, bright Kawi green, Honda orange, Suzuki yellow, etc.- so we know those won't fit in with our colors. You also don't even have to have a dedicated theme at all. It's your day; make it what you want it to be.
