The Waltz and a ball gown

Rennyrenrennerson, on October 23, 2016 at 8:28 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 9

My FH and I are doing the Viennese Waltz for our first dance. We are pretty good but I'm stressing on doing it in my ballgown. I am afraid of tripping on my dress. Do any of you have tips on this? TIA

Have you thought about getting a different dress to change into later on?

Does he know you're wearing a ballgown? With such a large skirt, you may need to stand further away from one another than you typically do, which will feel different! Also, have your seamstress hem your gown an inch or two shorter than the floor. No one will notice, and it will prevent the fabric from getting snagged on the floor or under your feet (or FH's!).

If you have the budget you could buy a structured slip or a ball gown skirt (even if it isn't quite as big as yours) to wear while practicing. Maybe try ebay or consignment shops?

@mnbride, at first I did but I really want to stay in my wedding dress the whole night. Plus we are doing this first thing when we get to reception.

@mrsski, I think you are right about the hemming. I was hoping I wouldn't have to go that route as I've already had it hemmed once but when I did I completely forgot about the dance.......(I was just so excited to have it on, lol).

Is there anyone besides FH that can practice with you?

Before hemming again and so you have an idea how to handle the skirt?

@A&L I can wear it at the dance studio maybe. One of the instructors will I'm sure. Thanks for the idea.

Definitely practice in the dress or in a skirt with similar poof, if you aren't wanting FH to see it. You can probably find a cheap costume after Halloween that will give a similar feel.

Try practicing in your shoes and a skirt that resembles your dress. Alternatively, you can modify your dress to include a hidden hook to hoist part of your dress for your first dance: this can get a bit tricky though.
