What is the significance of the money purse, and how exactly is it used in the wedding?

We had one to use during the dollar dance - which isn't an unheard of tradition in my area, and guests were quite receptive :-P

I agree with Paris, for the dollar dance which is also common in my area.

It is held by the bride during the receiving line so that she can collect the cards as she greets her guests. Then one of the eldest women in the family is in charge of guarding the purse/money for the remainder of the reception.

It is how cards were collected Before birdcages and card boxes.

We are having one, but I'm not calling it a money purse. It's just an ivory satin bag that I will carry with me when we make the rounds to the tables. I hate that I'm going to carry it, but I've seen it done at other weddings. I was going to make a card box, but I prefer to keep my sanity intact. FH said it's necessary because our guests will give us cards and he doesn't want to keep shoving them in his jacket.

If you don't know what a money purse is, you probably shouldn't do the dollar dance

(as in, it's probably not something that you and your family do commonly)

I recently found out about the "money dance" from a friend - I had no idea.. I think its awesome... my FH isn't thrilled with the idea. Def not doing the money purse- doing the card box instead.

I'm Mexican, so there's 99% of the time a dollar dance. Some aunt will hand out pins to pin the money on your dress if you don't have a purse.

I've seen the dollar dance done before at my aunts wedding. It hasn't been a discussion for our wedding, and I don't think I'm interested in it. If they want to give money they can put it in the card in our card holder lol

My mom had a money purse at her wedding. When she went table to table to greet her guests, guests would just hand the bride a card. This was all before card boxes.

Our DJ said to appoint the MOH and BM to collect money from the Dollar Dance, as no one is pinning jack on MY dress. LOL Since we have no WP...he said to just appoint someone to such....so a "money purse" must not be a common thing in our area? We are having a Cards box, I made from a vintage suitcase.

Kat, that's what I said. Ain't nobody putting holes or touching me lol. I am wearing the little purse though, so it solves the problem. I got mine for free from a friend. You can get one cheap from David's Bridal though.
