The Greatest Gift

Mary, on July 1, 2019 at 9:23 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 21

I just received the biggest blessing. My FH and I are very broke college students and we are having a super bargain wedding. 80 people for only $5,000. I wasn't even going to get a wedding dress, I was going to wear my grandmothers dress that barely fits and doesn't look very good on me. As we started planning more, I decided on doing almost everything DIY, everything down to napkins just to cut costs. My in laws could definitely see us struggling. We were letting go of things we really wanted to do (cheesecake, a wedding dress, and a cocktail hour namely) and they could see us (attempting to) handle it with a fair amount of grace. We knew we didn't have any money and although it was frustrating at times, all that matters is that we are marrying the love of our lives in front of all of those we love. It doesn't matter if we eat sheet cake and all of the plates are plastic.

Long story short, my in laws decided to gift us the entire $5,000 budget. They agreed to pay for everything. I was *not* expecting that at all. They are supportive but neither my FH or I were expecting anybody to be paying for our wedding but us. It is truly such a blessing and a huge weight off of our shoulders. We only have to worry about our bills now and no longer have to stress over saving up half of our paychecks anymore. I am so thankful and I just had to share it. I plan on paying it forward when my future children get married so that they know what it's like to be blessed when you need it most!

Thanks for hearing me ramble! Happy wedding planning!

Aw! What a wonderful blessing! ❤️ I hope you can consider a nice dress. Call bridal stores and ask about their discontinued dresses and prices (I got my reception wedding dress for less than $200). David’s has some cheap dresses too.

That is nice. Amazon has some long white skirts and short cute wedding dresses if you are still looking for one.

So dreamy! And you're glowing in it. Probably not like the style of grandma's gown. You're a lucky bride.

Thats super exciting! Everything works out when its suppose too. FH and I were not planning on receiving any help either and low and behold My parents came out of the woodwork (my mom has been on permanent disability since 2001) and paid for our venue $3200 and the $500 deposit on my dress. His parents were weren't expecting anything either and they decided to pay for our alcohol (we have to provide all our alcohol for the bar to serve, and our transportation ($575) so its always a blessing!

Yup! All of the above! They wanted to make sure we could have perfect day and not worry about going into debt or taking time off of school!

That is so great! My and husband's families were both already super generous in helping with our wedding but we were still being crazy budgeting and not having anything that wasn't absolutely NECESSARY. About a month before the wedding, my mom said she didn't want me to feel like our wedding was just necessities and that I didn't get to splurge or treat myself to anything, so she surprised me with an extra $500 for the things that I wished I had, but had budgeted out! This allowed us to hire a cocktail hour musician, get a professional bouquet for myself (was planning to just wrap them from the grocery store which would've been fine, but I LOVED my professional bouquet and it relieved so much stress to have one!), and raise the cap on our bar to what we originally wanted it to be. It was such a wonderful surprise to be able to last-minute add on the things that I had wished I had! Smiley smile

I'm so glad they were able, and willing to help you. It can be so stressful and upsetting to know what you want and realize you just can't afford it. You are so fortunate to be marrying into a clearly wonderful family. Smiley smile

My FH and I are also budgeting. We have a 2 year old, and spend stupid amounts of money on daycare. We decided to push our date out an extra 8 months in order to have a 2nd tax return to use. I went dress shopping with my mom while she was visiting (she was only here for a week and lives on the east coast) intending to use the last bit of last year's tax return to pay for it, budgeting for about $600 for the dress. We also weren't planning on going on our honeymoon for at least a year after the wedding, but possibly longer because we just couldn't afford it. When we got there and were looking at dresses, my mom looked at me like I was crazy when I mentioned the payment and informed me that she was paying for my dress, and I ended up picking the most amazing dress that ended up being $862, and a gorgeous tiara. She also spilled the beans and told me that I'm inheriting a string of heirloom pearls to wear, and they're gifting us a cruise to either the Caribbean or the Bahamas for our honeymoon. I almost started to cry right there in the David's Bridal wedding dress section. It was the most amazing feeling.
