The Good, The Bad and The Ugly-David's Alterations

Deb, on December 29, 2016 at 9:54 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 5

I bought my dress back in May. It was a size too small (off the rack and clearance) but the consultant and seamstress working that day both agreed that it could be let out. Deep down I knew I was making a mistake, but since they are professionals I went with it because I love my dress and it was in my very small budget. I lost 12 pounds since that time so I thought maybe it would even fit and not need to be let out. My boobs were the first to go, of course.

I went back and forth on using Davids or a seamstress who owns her own shop. I am glad in the end that I went with Davids because they had to make it right since I bought the dress there and paid for the alterations there as well. 99% of the time I am a small business type for girl.

I should have listened to my gut for this process and kept looking for a dress that wasn't too small. I had a feeling that they were not correct in being able to let it out enough.

Alterations story in comments.

I went through my dress fitting and the seamstress assured me that it was fine and the dress could be let out enough. I still wasn’t 100% sold but went with it. It was still too tight and now the chest had to be taken in because my boobs are smaller. I went last night to try on the dress and learn the bustle with a BM of mine. I asked her to go because of the bad feeling I had, and she majored in fashion and can make clothes so I knew she would be a great help. First time I put on the dress it was WAY too tight so they said they would let out “a stitch”. I said it wouldn’t be enough and it wasn’t. They let it out 2 more times and it wasn’t enough. I still had skin hanging over the back and under my arms and I was not happy. They told me that there was nothing they could do so I said alterations and the dress were guaranteed and asked them to start bringing out dresses for me to try on from off the rack that would need to be altered in one week. I used their schedule for alterations and they told me to come for the first time in December. I felt like it was waiting too long but they assured me it was not. I also wasn’t filling out the dress at all but they gave me the push up cups as opposed to the regular ones I originally selected.

They suggested a bolero and I don’t want one so we tried sleeves. It had to be suggested by another bride who was there. The alterations people kept saying it looked fine. The only sleeves they had in stock were white, my dress is ivory. The beading didn’t match either. I said it they wouldn’t work and they said that I was just being picky. My friend offered at that point to make me sleeves from the remnants, so I asked for some sort of reimbursement or deal since the alterations didn’t work at all, even though I was told that they would. They ended up finding sleeves in the sewing room that were actually perfect and I like the dress better now. My veil no longer looked good (I got it for 10 dollars on amazon so no loss). I found one on clearance and it works perfect.

All in all, I recommend following your gut if you feel something won’t be right. I don’t think it was done just to get a sale, or for any other reason. I think they thought it would work, but it didn’t work for my body. The alterations manager was great and kept trying. The only thing that bothered me was that they kept telling me it looked fine. It didn’t at all, and even another bride who was getting sized agreed. They did keep going until it was right.

I'm nervous now since I have my alterations at David’s!

I'm glad that something worked for you though!

@katie- I wouldn't worry too much. They were as determined as I was to fix it. It took some time and stress but it worked out perfectly.

How stressful! Glad it worked out. I went there just to look once and there were extremely unhelpful. I immediately walked out & didn't go back. Not a place I would recommend to anyone.

I'm happy it worked out. The David's bridal I went to gave me this huge book, and when I went through them and picked out 5-6 dresses, they didn't have any of them. Then the dresses that they did grab were waayy larger (I wear a dress size 12, I got 18s and 20s), so I wasn't able to get a good fit even with the clips. The associate took forever (probably trying to find something close to my size). Shenever spent any actual time with me or trying to figure out if I liked it or not. I was looking at other brides getting fitted and their associates were all engaged and actually talking with them, while I never saw mine. I'm sure not all of them are like that, but I won't recommend the one I went to unless they're a curvier bride.
