The Dreaded Clinking Glass Tradition

Jortnee, on October 11, 2015 at 9:34 AM Posted in Planning 0 11

My family tends to really overdo it with the clinking glass tradition at weddings. FH and I are a little shy with PDA, and while we wouldn't mind it a few times, in previous experience my family members will clink their glasses pretty incessantly throughout the night. In order to avoid turning the entire reception into a kissing show, we are trying to come up with alternatives that also don't make us seem like fun-killers. Anyone else really hate this tradition? Any good ideas to avoid it? Thanks!!!

Plastic cups. That's probably the only sure-fire way to avoid it if people do that where you are.

The clinking glass didn't happen at my wedding, and I rarely see it, so I don't have any other advice.

I've seen people make games out of it. So like they'll post a sign at each table saying, if you want us to kiss you'll have to come up and sing us a song or do a dance, clinking glasses won't do it! If you google this you might come up with some ideas.

I went to a wedding last night where the tied in wooden utensils to the rustic theme. There was zero clinking. I hated it since I hate eating off wooden anything! It was torture. Lol!

We are thinking about telling guests that we will only kiss if they come up and share some advice with us. That immediately eliminates anyone that is shy.

At a wedding last weekend the MC simply announced that the bride and groom would not be kissing on demand and that the glass clinking tradition would not be happening (he said it in a nicer way though). No one seemed to mind.

This cracks me up because my husband LOVES clinking the glass at weddings. Even with plastic, he finds a way. Sorry, dude. Just make it a quick peck! :-)

We are having a donation to charity box. Anyone that wants to see us kiss needs to come up and make a donation to the charity of our choice to get us to kiss. Other family members have done this.

If your worried it will be a 'fun' killer, don't be most people think it is so sweet that you are think of others. Just make sure to pick a charity that has mass appeal or makes sense in your group of guests. We are having all donations go to Cancer Care.

Place a box or cute container to collect the donations near the front and people come up and donate and you kiss. We have a sweet little poem to go with the donation container. And our families will spread the word before the wedding that this is how you will get us to kiss.

I love the donation to charity box idea! I can see us doing that with donations to our local humane society since we are huge animal people. The dishware is being provided by our venue so plastic cups and wooden utensils aren't really an option for us, though those are both good ideas. Thanks everyone!

Just don't kiss! We had friends get married who were very anti-traditional wedding things. They had a beautiful, pretty traditional ceremony and reception but they totally drew the line on this silly tradition. When people started clinking their glasses, they just ignored it, and guests got the hint!

We both hate this and have decided if any clinks their glass, we're going to clink ours as well. I love kissing DH, just not on cue.

The last wedding I went to, at the very beginning the DJ announced that it wouldn't be happening, and had one big clink-fest at the beginning so everyone "could get it out of their system" lol. It worked fine!

We just ignored the glass-clinkers. After about the 3rd time (it was one table) they stopped.
