The Big Cake Flavor Decision

Meghan, on June 11, 2019 at 1:33 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 15
So we know what bakery we're going to get our cake from, and we've tasted a lot of their delicious cake, but deciding what flavors to choose seems an impossible task! We're going to have a 3 tier cake so we can have 3 different flavors. The frosting will be probably be vanilla buttercream. All of the cakes are tres leches style cakes, but it's the flavors that are causing indecision.

Here are the options:

Coconut - white cake made with coconut milk and with coconut frosting between layers

Cookies and Cream - one layer white cake, one layer chocolate cake with cookies and cream frosting between the layers

Strawberry - white cake with strawberry filling between the layers

Dulce de Leche - white cake with dulce de leche (caramel) frosting between the layers

I definitely want the cookies and cream one because it's unique and will appease chocolate lovers. It's really between the other three that we're having trouble choosing. FH really likes the coconut one but I feel like coconut is one of those flavors people either love or hate and I'm not sure how many of our guests love it and how many hate it.

If presented with these flavors on a table in front of you, which one would you pick?

Those all sound amazing. I'd pick the dulce de leche!

I would pick Dulce de Leche. Yum!

Honestly, coconut is a very specific taste and I don't think it would do well at a wedding. Unless it is a beach wedding.

If your FH wants coconut, maybe the smallest tier?

As 1 of those people that HATES coconut, I'd be adverse to that flavor lol. Otherwise, all the other 3 sound delicious.

I personally hate coconut lol So I would choose the other 3. Additionally, for a September wedding I don't think coconut fits as much as if it were a summer wedding!

    That's what I was thinking.

We'd been leaning towards the cookies and cream, coconut, and dulce de leche, but then I know some people like fruit fillings so I thought maybe we should have a fruit. But so far it seems like everyone's more into the other flavors!

I'd pick cookies and cream, dulce de leche, strawberry, and then coconut - but I'm really not a coconut fan. Either way, I think a chocolatey option, a more vanilla option, and then something more unique is typically a good way to go.

I’d go with your initial plan. I like fruit fillings personally (and I also like coconut), but it’s not my cake it’s yours so you should get what you want. You’ll have three options, so it’s not like you’re saying “if you don’t like this one flavor too bad.”

Our cake is a three layer cake, and our design consultant told us to pick an old people layer as the top layer. 🤣 She said the older people always want traditional wedding cake so we made a butter cake with vanilla frosting layers as our top tier.

Haha I like that advice. I guess by that logic it would be coconut or strawberry on top.

One tier Coconut, since that is your FH's favorite. One tier Cookies and Cream, since that is your favorite. One tier Strawberry, because that is a popular flavor.

I love coconut so I’d be totally on board for that.

I love that you’re doing tres leches. My FH and I have been looking for a baker to do tres leches and no one says they can do it as a wedding cake. How are your tiers going to be stacked?

They said that they have internal columns for structure that they use. We're actually kind of renting the columns since if we bring them back in good condition we get some money back.

See if you have any Colombian bakeries in your area. The bakery we're using is Colombian and basically all of their cakes are tres leches cakes.
