That's Not My Name

Mandi, on February 7, 2020 at 1:57 PM Posted in Community Conversations 1 6
As we are receiving our RSVPs back, we are also lucky enough to be receiving some regrets and checks. And while I will admit that it is a little exciting to see checks made out to Mr. & Mrs. Newlastname, I gotta wonder "How do we cash this?" That's not my name. And while I plan to change my name in 3 months, that's still not my name, because I'm most likely hypenating. And since it's made out to both of us, most banks will require two signatures.

I don't plan to cash it for 2 weeks [I'm only dragging out the thank you notes 3 times.]
But has anyone had any issues with cashing checks like this?

This happened to us as well. We had to wait until we had my name changed at the bank before they would allow us to deposit it. I would just put them in a safe place until you get all your name change stuff done then take them with you to the bank and have them do your name change and deposit at the same time.

So I currently work at a bank and how I would cash it would be:

You sign in married name and then under it sign with legal last name

    FH signs under that

I've only had it happen a few times before, but every time I've gotten approval to do it that way! Depending on dollar amount they may just request that you deposit it instead of cash it right away!

It's definitely worth a call to your bank as many banks have varying policies Smiley smile

We had no issues cashing any checks. The teller told me to sign twice, once with my current last name and once with what will be my new last name. Honestly I still haven’t legally changed it and I’m still cashing checks to me made out to my husbands last name to this day with no problems 🤷🏼‍♀️ We have Wells Fargo.

Yes I work for a bank also and I agree with kymarmck you would sign how they spelled your name and then under that how your name is on the account and if it is made out to and your FH would sign also under your signature. if its or then either of you can endorse the check Smiley smile

^^^This. I also worked in banking and this happened all the time. We accepted checks done exactly this way.

This happened to us, as well, and I did not change my name.

The bank still asked me to sign it, as my name, next to DH's name. They will still accept it... but, oh, it is *such* a pet peeve of mine.

Either pick one person to address it to - and make sure you check the name - or use both their pre-married names. Easy peasy.
