Thanking Parents at Reception

Rachael, on December 10, 2018 at 12:45 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 10

Anyone have any sweet ways of thanking your parents at the reception? Not for paying for the wedding so much but for everything they've done for us growing up.

I know there are cute ceremony ideas to do this kind of thing but we're getting married in a Catholic church so we can't really do anything during the ceremony.

You could always do a toast for them!

I agree with Chandra, I was going to thank my Mom and family during our toast.

We didn't do this but I've seen it done at other weddings - much like the bride/groom or father/daughter, etc. have a "first dance" you could do an "honor dance" and either have them pick a song or you pick a song that means a lot to you. I've seen it done where the bride & groom dance as well, and I've seen it once or twice where it was just the parents - giving them their moment to shine.

We also had an incredibly small wedding party— just MOH and BM who wore navy blue. We invited our parents, siblings, and grandparents to wear navy as well to be "part of our entourage" as an extended informal wedding party, and they all seemed to love it. My husband and I both had parent dances (father daughter, mother son), and our parents were around while we were getting ready in our respective spaces. Simply having that time in the morning is nice if you can swing it.

Our day was incredibly early and fast paced. We had planned to thank our parents and grandparents during our welcome lunch but timing got away from us.

Fortunately, I wrote both parents and grandparents thank you notes for being such driving forces in our lives, and investors of our wedding and special day. We had these notes for them with their boutineers/floral cuffs. As a thank you we had floral arrangements with purchased vases so they could simply take them home to enjoy.

Instead of doing a bouquet toss, I made a smaller version of my bouquet and gave it to my now-husband's mom at the reception. Before I gave it to her, I said a few words thanking her for raising the man of my dreams and for welcoming me into the family Smiley smile My parents have chosen not to be in my life, and his dad passed away when he was young, so it was a really sweet moment that I'm glad we got to share.

At a friend's wedding last year both the bride and groom gave speeches about how their parents raised them in loving homes and gave them a great example of what a partnership should be, etc. before passing it off to them for their own speeches. It was really sweet.
