So.. when we were shopping for venues- we fell in love with this particular one- a rooftop right downtown with great views. The only problem was that it came with a caterer.. we had no choice in the matter. My fiance is a chef and the ONE thing that he cares about is that the food be good.. and is leaving the rest of the details up to me. We had our tasting last night.. and the food was less than amazing. Almost inedible. They are a decently known catering company- although known mostly for their affordable prices.

When we were asked to choose our menu items, we asked at what point we would be able to come and actually sample the items we were interested in choosing. Her response was that the tasting was supposed to be a "profile" of what they are capable of and then we just pick what we think sounds good. But if we didn't think the "profile" was good.. how could we be confident in choosing random things that we've never tried?

Do you get to try your entire menu?

We got to try everything. We went with and Italian resturant as our caterer and they brought out everything we asked for. There was 6 of us that went to the tasting and they brought out whatever we mentioned we were interested in. Then we picked from that. It was fantastic!

I would demand that you get to try more!

It was like a mass tasting- they do them every tues and you are allowed one for free. She said that if we wanted to come back it would be $15 a person and she couldn't guarantee that the items we wanted to try would be the ones served.

Apparently her point was that the tasting was supposed to be a profile of their work. It was a disappointing profile if you ask me.

You know it's bad when we literally scoured the menu looking for items that were least likely to be able to be screwed up.

It's not an option to switch venues- So I guess, if after another tasting we still aren't happy.. we will just grin and bear it. AND make sure that every other wedding detail is so amazing that people won't remember the shitty food. Haha. Smiley smile

My venue includes the caterer as well. We went to the first open house they had after choosing the venue to try some of the food from the caterer. After that we scheduled our tasting with the caterer and specifically chose things that were not offered at the open house, so we can tasted the majority of what they had to offer. I guess I'm lucky and not so lucky. Everything we tasted was phenomenal which makes it very hard to make a decision!

We have our tasting on the 26th. We are tasting 3 entrees, and they serve and set up just as if it was our wedding reception that night. We have eaten at this restaurant previously and loved their food, so the tasting is just a formality, but we can't wait! We love our venue so glad we changed it.

I would still ask if it something they can address. One reception hall actually made it a point to say they changed their chef when I asked for their banquet menus. They might listen if enough people say something (hopeful thinking).

I am in the same situation. My fiance is a chef. What did you end up doing?
