Temecula with 70 guests or Las Vegas with 30?

Hi COVID/California Brides!

I need your expertise.

My fiancé and I have been planning a three day, “destination” wedding for 70 of our family and friends in Temecula wine country in March of 2021. Our venue property, Wedgewood Weddings, has told us they will not reschedule our wedding unless they are closed for our wedding date by the state of California.

With 100% of us coming from out of the county, 25% of our guests coming from out of state, three of my best friends being healthcare providers and both of our fathers having pre-existing conditions, I’m not sure it’s worth 36k to have a wedding that will not be well-attended. Wedgewood, like many other venues, requires a minimum investment whether or not enough guests attend to meet that minimum.

This is an issue for us right now, because our second payment is due in a couple of weeks. We are fine losing the deposit, but I don’t want to give them more of our business in light of their lack of customer service during a public heath crisis, and I’m not thrilled to be asking our loved ones to take an unnecessary risk next March.

We are thinking of scrapping the whole thing, and planning an elopement for 30 (our families are really that big!) in Las Vegas [which will cost around less than 10k]. We love to travel and I’ve always wanted a destination wedding, so for me, I’m good as long as we’re celebrating for the whole weekend!

Keeping in mind that Temecula is in a healthier place (read: Not as busy) than Las Vegas, along with the pricing, what would you do?

What would you prefer as a guest?

Other factors to consider: I already have a photographer, videographer, florist and Photobooth vendor. I would lose all those deposits, but again we don’t mind the money.

It’s such a tough call to make since we don’t know what March 2021 would look like. If you don’t feel comfortable with the venue, however, I think that speaks volumes to which way you’re leaning. You could always try to plan a destination at another location that isn’t such a hotspot for travel currently (my first thoughts in CA were Catalina or one of our state/national parks, unless you’re looking for a place with a lot of nightlife). I personally wouldn’t travel to Vegas right now since I’ve been social distancing pretty hard, but I know I don’t speak for everyone’s comfort level. Have you looked at any other venues in Temecula that may have better rescheduling options?

Thanks, Nicole! Unfortunately, we have looked into other venues in the area and they are doing much the same.
We’re going to ask where our guests would feel more comfortable and that’ll be the place 🙂 So far, Temecula is winning! Now we’ll have to decide what to do with that extra hour of reception if there’s no dancing...we’re thinking of bringing in a stand-up comedian! COVID weddings are so fun! So creative 😂

I would rather go to Vegas than Temecula anyways!

Hi! Wedgewood bride here in Temecula for next summer 2021. Honestly as stressful as this is to plan a wedding during COVID, March 2021 is still SO far away. I wouldn’t stress about finding entertainment instead of dancing just yet. You still have 8 months and so much can change. Would suck to put a deposit on some sort of entertainment and then dancing is okay by then.

I also understand being upset at Wedgewood for not allowing you to reschedule but again, it’s so far away they don’t know what the state will be like then. I wouldn’t say lack of customer service, at the end of the day they are a business.
Also DEF Temecula over Vegas, if you’re planning on Galway Downs they have so much land outdoors it’ll be so easy for people to hang out and social distance. I know they provide outdoor games during cocktail hour. Maybe they can keep them out during the reception as well?
    Best of luck!
