Hi everyone! So my FH and I are doing things in a non-traditional sense as we decided to get married without a traditional engagement first. He still wants to propose, so I don't have my ring yet, so we're unofficially engaged all while planning our wedding! I picked my engagement ring out myself. I am not taking his last name. We're having a non-denominational wedding. The bouquet toss won't be about marital expectations. We will only have a MOH and BM, no other bridesmaids or groomsmen. We're doing donuts and no wedding cake. I feel like my wedding story is so off the beaten path haha and I'm okay with it, but I want to hear from other brides/grooms or brides/grooms-to-be on how you and your SO went non-traditional!

I looked at aquamarine rings also! I didn’t want a diamond, so I went with a beautiful morganite ring and my wedding set will be my mom’s from her marriage to my dad, that is a diamond with small white sapphires. I think non-traditional rings are so special! And nothing wrong with a long engagement! Gives you more time to plan and save up. My FH and I will be getting married on our 10th anniversary next year. I see marriage as a continuation and not a “beginning,” as many brides do. I’m sure you might agree since you’ve been with your FH for some time also! I love that you guys are having a wedding set so early! You can have some killer brunch food options like pancakes and chicken and waffles! So good

I love this! I don’t think we’ll be going on our honeymoon right away either. Probably gonna wait for cheaper flight times haha! Wow, I didn’t know that about Colorado. That’s so cool. We’re having my friend who is ordained marry us haha. Hey, as long as you love the ring, it could be from a cracker jacks box amirite? Lol. The Harry Potter theme is so fun! I bet you have so many ideas to pick from! My FH and I are such nerds that instead of table numbers, we’re using quotes about love from some of our favorite movies, but we HAD to throw Star Wars, Lord of the Rings and Avengers in there 😂 And we’ll be dancing our first dance to a song from Avenger’s Endgame. I like that he’s also wearing a ring, cause men should have engagement rings also! Yes hahaha I so agree on people asking about the proposal cause then I have to explain how it hasn’t happened yet, but it’s going to, no I don’t know how and yes we’re planning the wedding before it happens lol so awkward!

    No diamond in the ring.

Non-denominational ceremony (and a wand was used during the handfasting part of it).

    No tosses of any kind.

    No MOH speech.

Recessional to "Take Me Out to the Ballgame".

Bridesman, and groomswomen. Groomswomen wore tuxes.

Oh, and the swordfight we had at the reception, where DH and I defeated our friends who had been possessed by Voldemort.

You’re so sweet for giving such positive feedback! I bet your ring is gorgeous and so sentimental!
Yes we have been together for a while and see married as a continuation of us. We had a friend who had a very short engagement because they wanted to “start their lives together”. They kind of insulted us with our long engagement as thought we didn’t have a life together and marriage was the only way to do that.
We considered brunch food for our reception but went the “traditional” route with chicken & steak. But we added a pasta bar to tie together our Italy themed wedding!

The Take Me Out to the Ballgame is such a great touch! Haha and I love how you kept the theme with the wand and then the battle later! There’s something about women in tuxes that screams power! I love it! We’re also not doing speeches. They can be so awkward haha. It sounds like you all had a blast! Thank you for sharing!

Aww thank you! And I understand how you felt with your friend. We were visiting his family in Texas and I believe we had been together for six or seven years at that time and his cousin had been dating this girl for a short time and proposed and everyone was calling her part of the family. I remember how annoyed I was feeling like my FH and I weren’t as “valid” to them somehow even though we had been together for much longer than this engaged couple had even known each other. When you’ve been together for sometime before you decide to get married, nothing starts at “I do,” it just continues on in maybe a new chapter, but the previous chapters still very much count towards the whole book! The only reason we’re deciding on next November is because we like the idea of the wedding anniversary being on our anniversary as a couple to show that continuation. Otherwise we would probably wait many more years just as you are. There’s nothing wrong with a long engagement.
And honestly you can never go wrong with chicken and steak and a pasta bar sounds delicious!

We'll be doing a first look and then taking some time for ourselves before the ceremony. It will be a nondenominational ceremony that my grandpa will be officiating. I'm trying to convince FH to let me walk down the aisle to the reprise of "A Million Dreams" by Pink. We'll be doing a garter and bouquet toss, but I'm having it so my bouquet will break apart so multiple people get flowers instead of just one. We're also going to do a build your own mac and cheese bar for dinner.

We had a 5.5 month engagement. We used evites instead of paper invitations, we skipped the engagement photos and save the dates (since it was 5.5 months) My MOH was my 12 year old daughter. Husband choose two young men from a youth group that he runs to be his "Best Men" We had a brunch wedding with a 10:00 am start time, we served muffins, mini cheesecakes, bacon, egg puffs, had a fruit and yogurt parfait bar, coffee and orange juice. We didn't do a bouquet toss, or a garter toss. AND I didn't plan a single thing! I had a group of friends who wanted to help, so I told them just a few things I envisioned (twinkle lights, the fact that it was a brunch wedding and the location) and they planned the rest! I didn't know what my centerpieces looked like, the décor, the exact menu or anything until my wedding day. It was totally stress free and I loved all the little surprises my people planned for me! It was the most amazing day!

You had me at "build your own mac and cheese bar" lol. I've only heard good things about a First Look, so I'm sure you and your FH will love that! Hahaha you're nicer than me cause I didn't really give my FH a say in what I am going to walk down to. But he also gets to choose his song to walk down to, so I thought it'd be cute if we each picked our own song that was kinda dedicated to each other. I was in a wedding once where the bouquet broke apart and that was such a cute idea.

Wow! That's a really quick engagement, but I love how your loved ones stepped in and took over the planning. That probably helped it be so much sweeter on the day of seeing it all. We're also doing evites cause I'm trying to be as environmentally conscious as I can be and I know people just throw save the dates and invites away. I'm glad you didn't have any stress and just got to enjoy being engaged!

My husband and I met in 2012 and were friends but didn't become romantically involved until last summer 2018. We didn't want to live together before we got married so we decided to do the quick engagement Smiley smile As for not having the stress of décor planning.....it was AWESOME! I got to relax and watch it all unfold.

I still call my “fiancé” boyfriend hah we didn’t do the whole proposal/engagement thing either. We’ve lived together for 8+yrs and honestly when I see girls getting anxious about waiting for a proposal to happen even after ring shopping it’s almost like they don’t have faith in their fiancés or relationship. We’ve known for years we wanted to marry each other without a shadow of a doubt so there never needed to be any “pressure” from either side. We were just busy focusing on our careers and having fun just the two of us. Only reason we are now planning the wedding is because we want to have babies and our parents are traditional.

Most of my watches cost more than most e-rings so I don’t feel like I really need something that looks pretty much like what everyone else has... I’m planning to do a simple gold band from Cartier, but will be spending 5-figures on the outfits, honeymoon, and a photo shoot individually. We want to hire the best team for the shoot- I’ve heard from several married people that photos are really what you’re left with in the end!
