Teacher Brides- Professional Name Change

Adeline, on February 3, 2021 at 1:20 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 3

I am getting married in June 21' (hopefully, thanks a lot Rona). I am in my first year of teaching. I have my California teaching credential, currently completing induction, and am planning on getting a Masters after that. My question is: How difficult was it to change your name on your teaching credential and all other professional documents? Did you just change it the next time you had to renew? Was it an issue with your district changing your name? Did it take forever? I know every district is different. I am still trying to decide if I am going to change my name. pros and cons from fellow teacher brides??

You should just have to pay a fee and submit your marriage license to the licensing board - that’s how it works in Oregon where I am. Super simple. You can probably find info on the licensing board’s website.

It was super easy (CA teacher here, too). I ended up getting married during the school year (July didn't happen, so we did September). You need to have your new SS card and DL before you can submit your paperwork with the CTC, but once you have those, you'll fill out this form, photocopy your marriage certificate, SS card, and DL, and then send them in to the CTC. There was more involved with changing my name with the district than changing it with the CTC (check to see if your district has a name change packet with all the forms you need to fill out for them. If you can, get it ahead of time so you can fill out your paperwork early and then just finalize once you have your marriage certificate). I didn't change my name on my degrees, but that hasn't been an issue.

Oh my goodness. I can remember a teacher getting so mad at me because I called her by her former name. She had three different last names during my 4 years of HS. First husband's last name freshman yr, maiden name after divorce sophomore and junior yr, then 2nd husband last name senior year.

Please be patient with students if they accidentally call you by your former last name
