Tea Staining success?

bdcwallace, on June 16, 2015 at 11:03 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 17

Has anyone tried tea staining their dress? I custom ordered a dress from China at a fraction of the cost. It is absolutely gorgeous and fits me perfect. The only problem is I requested a vintage ivory color, but they sent bright white. There is no time to return it and wait for a new one to be made & shipped before our vow renewal. We are having a country shabby chic ceremony and everything else is ivory! Please help with tea staining advice.

I found one on pinterest and got a good tutorial but it said to put it in the washing machine on the gentle cycle afterwards. I'm afraid it will mess up and the sequins & rhinestones will fall off.

I've never done it but I don't think I would either. I'd be so afraid of ruining the dress. Are you sure you can't live with it being bright white?

No our whole renewal is vintage themed. The app won't allow me to upload a photo from my phone, but the dress looks totally different in the darker color. The white shows less detail.

Any way they can send you the right color? I've never tea-stained before so I can't help other than to just look online. Maybe instead of putting it through the washing machine, you can just rinse it in the tub?

Double post oops. Also, I did see that those directions also say to wash it in the gentle cycle, but if you're worried about the beading I say just rinse it in the tub and it'll do the same trick I'm sure.

I stained my veil from our first wedding using tea in the sink. I've never tried a whole dress. Since it was custom made, there is no time for them to make & ship another one. I guess I could try it in the tub. I will only be out about $100 if I reuin it Smiley smile

I would take the dress to a professional to have them dye it. I would call local alterations places to see if they would be able to dye it. If you decide to attempt it yourself I would use actual fabric dye, not tea.

My mother stained my dress and flower girl dress with tea in the bath tub. She did not put them in the washer after, she just rinsed them in cold water and vinegar until the water ran clear and hung to dry.

Do you know how much tea she added to the tub?

I think it would work. I have NEVER done this before but this is what I would try:

    1. Clean your bathtub and make sure there is no cleaner residue whatsoever...

    2. Partially fill your bathtub with water

    3. Steep some really strong black tea into a pitcher or large tea pot, and add the tea to the bathtub until you get the colour you want. You can always add more but you cannot add less. Mix it in so that the colour is consistent throughout the whole tub.

    4. Add your dress...

It looks like your dress is all the same fabric, is that correct? If it's not I wouldn't NOT risk doing this as some fabrics will take to dyes better than others (ie part of it could end up darker or lighter).

If you're afraid to put your dress in the washing machine (I was!) you *can* handwash your dress... again in the bathtub. Use a mild dye and scent free soap -- I used gentle sunlight on mine. Dry your dress on a rack flat and not hanging so that it doesn't stretch. I did wash mine after the wedding and so far so good.

    Good luck!

The amount of tea: just keep adding it little by little until you see the colour you want... I don't think there's going to be an exact amount.
