Tax on photography?

Claudia, on August 17, 2017 at 11:21 PM Posted in Planning 0 12

Is it normal for photographers to charge sales tax on the entire package? I was surprised to see this on our invoice, but I suppose some tax does make sense.

If it's not common, would it make sense to decrease tip if they are charging tax?

Yes they should charge tax. They have to pay tax so they charge it. Do not decrease tip because of it.

If your photographer is selling you a product along with providing a service, taxes are charged. The service is photography. The products are electronic files, proofs, albums, prints, reprint release, etc.

This is with every service industry ... if there's a product there are taxes.

Taxes have nothing to do with how much a customer tips.

Yes. They charge tax. And no. Dont decrease the tip. When you eat out at a restaurant they charge tax on your bill. Are you going to decrease your servers tip because of that? Most likely not.

Surprised that a business charged tax? He should be charging tax. I would be leery of any company that didn't. Do not decrease his tip because of it. He does not keep those taxes.

This is very state specific. NY requires sales tax on products but not on most services. Check your state law to be sure.

In Florida, if there is no physical product exchanged, there was no sales tax applied. I'm not getting a photo album or USB or prints, so I am not paying sales tax on my package. However, if I added a photo album to my package, I would pay sales tax on the entire package. Each state will differ.

No, it wouldn't make sense to decrease the tip. They don't keep tax. I hope that when you go out to eat, you don't deduct the sales tax from your waiters tip.

Yes, what Kathleen said Smiley smile If you're receiving images (even if that's all your receiving is a USB/CD of images), that's a product and there will be tax.

Tax wasn't included on our bill/invoice, but I assume it was included in the overall price. I'm also not certain if she runs her business as an LLC or just as an independent person - I think in our state that might make a difference but I'm not sure!
