Tax & Gratuity

Kassey, on April 27, 2015 at 10:22 AM Posted in Planning 0 6

Was this included in your catering/venue contract? If so has anyone had an issue with the amount changing after you have already signed your contract?

I received an invoice Friday from my venue with an estimate of what we will owe for our tax and gratuity. In our contract it says we pay 9% food and beverage tax which is totally fine and 18% for gratuity, but on the invoice our gratuity is set at 20%. Not sure if this is something I should bring up or is it normal for something like that to change. I don't mind paying them 20% I just would have liked to have known prior to signing the contract so I could have budgeted for it.

Definitely ask the question. The worst they will say is that contract is subject to change.

Our tax & service charge is included in the pp price of our venue, they also include tip in there too for us. However they do suggest that we tip the Matre'D / day of coordinator they provide at least 1200 on the day of.

Not sure it helps but that extra 1200 definitely did surprise FH he feels like we should be able to decide how much to tip them, especially since they are only there for the actual day, not doing anything leading up to the reception.

Bring it up. This is one of my pet peeves about my prior industry; the lack of transparency in this area. The fun of tipping is being able to decide who and how much, and this crap about calling a gratuity just that when it really is their salary is creepy and sneaky.

Ask a lot of questions and get sufficient answers.

Sorry this happened, but it's definitely something you should have asked about. My venues was up front about everything because we wanted a bottom line number with all fees and taxes included. I'm not sure where you are at but 18-20% is pretty normal around here. It is strange that it wasn't in the contract though. Do you have a copy of your contract to check? Maybe you just overlooked it.

This is the main reason we don't automatically add a gratuity. If you get a quote from us, it might say X dollars per person plus tax. Once you book with us, your contract will show the amount of tax. I assume hotels/venues that provide catering do things much differently.

Definitely ask! We got lucky and our contract states no gratuity is charged or expected.
