Tax Charged on Refundable Damage Deposit??

FutureMrsQ2017, on October 2, 2016 at 2:34 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 8

Hi all! I am pretty new to this board and this is my first post! I am getting married in a year and we booked our venue about 2 weeks ago. Im reviewing our receipt of charges and noticed we were charged sales tax for a damge deposit? Is this normal or acceptable? Here is what the bill says: Room Rental $1200, Room Damage Deposit (100% Refundable) $500, Subtotal $1700, Sales Tax (8%) $136 .....Total $1836.00. I calculated the tax on just the venue and reaized that they charged tax on both the venue and the refundable damage deposit. What is everyone's opinion on this? Is it normal?

    I don't think that's normal.

It might be required by your state's laws. They don't add sales tax just for fun and giggles.

It sounds normal, but you can contact your venue to see if they will refund the sales tax in addition to the damage deposit, if there are no issues.

That sounds normal and they should definitely refund tax for the damage deposit as well.

Thanks for providing your opinions! I definitely agree that if anything it should be refunded when we get our damage deposit back. We also had to pay for our ceremony location (on the same site, but owned by a different company) and they didn't charge us tax at all - especially not on the damage deposit. It was $600 flat with a $50 damage deposit. No extra taxes.

They probably added the sales tax to the whole total, deposit included. But definitely ask what OKD said.

I'd check in with them. It would give me piece of mind. And then no surprises later.
