Tattooed Bride Blues...

Rachel, on September 17, 2020 at 4:29 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 20
Hi, ladies...

So I’ve finally started to compile a list of gowns that I want to try on, I am planning on starting shopping/trying things in the Spring 2021 so probably around April-June. One thing that my MIL has said is that I 100% have to go with a gown that is strapless/sleeveless since long-sleeved gowns don’t mesh well with tattooed arms/women. I see her point and I do know that there are gowns out there that have more detailing than others when it comes to sleeves, but I’m a little bummed as I had a couple of long-sleeved gowns on my list (the Fleetwood gown, for example, which is what’s pictured here) and I don’t want to rule them out entirely just because they “won’t mesh”. I know it’s mostly about what I want and what I choose to wear on my wedding day, but a long-sleeved gown is still on the table for me. I’d have to try them on to be sure of course, but I’ve added some cheesy selfies of myself so you all can see my tattoos and get an idea. They are all big pieces with color/femininity and I love them, but I won’t feel bad about covering them up if I fall in love with a gown that has sleeves. There is a small piece of me that likes to be a people-pleaser, so if I put on a gown that I love and my MIL makes a comment, I may be slightly crushed. Lol! Anyways, any feedback or input would be appreciated. ☺️☺️☺️Tattooed Bride Blues... 1Tattooed Bride Blues... 2

Wear what you love. Offbeatbride.com has a plethora of tattooed brides in traditional and nontraditional dresses and none of them look odd.

First, don’t take your FMIL shopping with you!
Take one or two people who will be brutally honest and tell you what you don’t want to hear vs someone who just says things to appease you.
After that try on any and every style you want and those that your sales person advises.
Pintrest / Google Wedding dresses for tattooed arms - there are a lot of options out there for you.

I was starting to post, "Don't invite your FMIL to go shopping with you!" and then I saw that Margaret had already said this. So, ditto to everything Margaret said.

There are no hard and fast rules for who can/should wear what. It IS (as you said) about what you like and what you feel looks good on you. While some long-sleeved dresses may not look good with your particular tattoos (due to the placement of the embellishments or whatever), there are absolutely some that will look great. Keep your own mind open and wait until you are trying them on to decide. Don't let the phantom voice of your FMIL (it won't be her real voice, because she won't be there in the dressing room with you) get in your head.

I wish I had thought about that sooner as I have already invited her (my mom’s suggestion), so unfortunately she will be coming with us. I look back and realize that that probably wasn’t the best idea. 😞

You could tell your FMIL that she can't come because of COVID regulations restricting number of guests lol. Though tbh, if I was worried about what my FMIL would say about my dress, I'd rather her tell me at the store than, god forbid, my wedding day Smiley atonished Mine was not invited and has not seen the dress yet, though I'm sure the day of the wedding she will make a comment like "you look so beautiful... in that dress" thanks I guess???

You are surely not the first bride with tattooed arms who wore a sleeved wedding dress, and I think once you put it all together, you will feel bridal and beautiful and no one will even care if your tattoos are visible or not. You'll know when you find the right dress, and when you do, just roll with it Smiley smile

Since she has already been invited, go ahead and take MIL to your first appointment, and you can try on dresses with her and have the experience, just don’t settle on one. Then, make an appointment the following week without her to REALLY try on dresses.

Have her go with you to ONE of the shopping sprees. She definitely doesn’t have to be involved in every one. Sounds like you’re close to your mom, take her and her alone to all the others. (Obviously take who you want, but IMO the less voices the better)

Whether or not your MIL is there with you, it's about what you truly love. Even if she does end up making a comment, don't let it sway you one way or another. Once you fall in love with a dress, all comments are dismissed. Stand your ground but opinions are definitely nice if you're unsure about something.

That’s EXACTLY what I’m going to do! Her, my mom, and I are going to go to a boutique a couple of hours drive away just to get my feet wet, and then my mom, my best friend, and I are going to take a trip to LA to REALLY find the dress. I feel so much better now that I have a plan in place!

That’s what I’ll have to do, I think! She will come with my mom and I to one boutique and then my mom, my best friend, and I will go to another where I will really find “the one”. It’s a great plan!

Perfect. You got this, girl! 💪🏻
And once you make the decision, whether it’s sleeves or not, own that decision & stay confident in it!

Thanks, girl!!! Also - is it weird that my taste/likes in gowns has shifted to something a little less crazy and more subtle? My original posts wwaaayy back when I started this list all had gowns that were unique and “out there”, but now I find myself wanting something more feminine, easy, and romantic because of my beach setting. The gowns I like now still have some unique qualities to them, but I’m not trying to wear something couture and only for the “wow” factor. Crazy how that happens! But the image I have of myself on the beach/venue location has changed my preferences quite a bit!

Not at all! I think a lot of brides’ dress tastes change the further along they get in their planning. And when you go try on dresses, you may end up picking something different than you had ever imagined!

I think that might end up happening to me! I had my sights set on a mermaid gown but now I don’t have my heart set on that style like I did originally. I’ll still try one on just in case, but this gown is currently at the top of the list (in addition to the gown of this original post!):Tattooed Bride Blues... 9

I know, right!? I love it. I tend to gravitate towards gowns with an illusion neckline or the high neck covering like that one has... I would feel less exposed! 😂😂😂

    Hi Rachel!

I was super nervous about other people's opinions(my mom to be exact) and had anxiety about going to try on dresses. I ended up going with my sister and trying on dresses to ease my mind a bit. We went on a random Tuesday night when we were the only ones in the shop. My older sister is super supportive and gave me the advice/opinion I needed. I found the dress on the first visit. I then scheduled a big "try on" session with the entire group where I tried on about 4 or 5 dresses then put on "the dress". My sister led the oohs and aahs and no one knows about the first visit.

It's your wedding; make sure you get something that you love!

And I thought I knew what I wanted until I started trying on dresses. What I thought I'd love I hated and ended up going with something I probably never would have picked. Try all the different styles on!

Hi, Kara! That’s definitely my plan as well! I think I’m going to have my MIL come to one appointment and then my Mom and best friend come to another. I don’t want to feel like I have to make a decision right then and there!! And I’m definitely going to have a wide variety of styles on my list... ball gown, a-line, mermaid, and long sleeves, some simple, some more detailed! I’m trying to have an open mind with all dress styles 😊😊😊😊

You're the bride - you can wear whatever you want, full stop! There are no rules about what styles you can and can't wear, and thankfully you can easily reassure your FMIL that this is exactly why you try dresses on before purchasing one... so you can see what it looks like on you and decide for yourself! 😉

Also that's just a ridiculous statement by your FMIL. Sure, many tattooed brides choose to wear sleeveless, strapless, or low-back styles (just like tons of other brides) - but most of the time it's because they want to showcase their ink, not because it's the only style gown that looks good on them! It sounds like she's just not look in the right places for inspiration. ❤️

    Hi Rachel

Are you still planning a beach wedding or has the venue change?
Like so many others have stated...try on everything you want to try on. You never know what will look the best on you.
