Tattoo artist at the reception

Michele, on October 20, 2020 at 6:23 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 26
One offbeat idea that we thought about was having a tattoo artist at the wedding for those who wish to partake.

Guests would not have to pay. The set up would have the same sanitation and paperwork as a regular shop. They do not perform on anyone who is intoxicated and have many positive reviews from the research I did. The designs would be minimalist with a variety to choose from but nothing wedding related (names/dates/etc).

Would you enjoy this a guest? The few friends/family we've tossed around with love the idea.

We had actually planned to do this at our wedding! I have never heard of anyone else doing it. However, we were unable to find a venue that would allow us to have the tattoo artist there. Apparently the venue would have to have particular insurance and licenses and inspections for it to be legal

I imagine that this idea ties in with your theme but personally I am not a fan of this idea at all.

Unless you have a number of friends who are so heavily tattooed they don’t care, I’d be worried about the people taking up the idea on a whim because of the convenience of having the tattoo artist at your wedding only to later realise they didn’t want it like they thought they would in the heat of the moment / rushed the decision.

Tattoos can be removed (painfully) but are more or less permanent and I personally would not someone to associate my wedding with a tattoo they regret.

I would want to be far away and out of sight. It would seem like someone was having a medical procedure, or body grooming, at the meal table. Or a dance. I have no objection to tattoos themselves, but I would have the same wish not to sit or eat around a Barber shaving people and doing beard work - YUK.

I have nothing against tattoos (I have one) but I would never, ever get one on a whim or during a party. If you want to do this and it's in your budget, that's fine. But I would not get too caught up in whether people actually use the service on the day. All of your guests might choose to abstain and that would be a disappointing waste of money (if you paid too close attention).

A practical thing to consider (I have heard this about caricature artists) is how many people the artist would actually have time for (assuming a lot of people did want to do it) during the reception. It might end up being only for a few guests and, again, you would wish you spent your money another way.

I mean for me that sounds cool (especially the guests not having to pay part lets all be honest 😜) but can they really tell if someone is intoxicated? Sometimes its hard to tell if a person is tipsy or if thats just their personality, and they may be making subpar decisions. It could work if most of the people you associate with are very into tattoos, but if not you may be wasting your money

I have tattoos, so I am in no way against them. But, I do not think this is a good idea. I personally would not participate in this.
I guess it’s a know your crowd kind of thing though and if people you’re inviting would be into then I guess it would be cool.
Now that I’m thinking about it, my husband would probably think it was awesome and get one because hey a free tattoo.

My fiancé and I have been also toying with the same idea! I love it! Maybe put a mention of it on the invite or website so people can decide or sign up ahead of time?

Hard pass for me. My wife and I are both fairly heavily tattooed and would never get tattooed by some random artist, some random tattoo from a flash sheet, surrounded by a bunch of random people. As a bride, I also wouldn’t want to pay for an open bar and a tattoo artist when guests can only participate in one or the other.

I would find this incredibly odd, and possibly unsanitary. Guests baring parts of their body while they get needled? Bleeding? Possibly making noise from pain? Are you going to have a well lit area set up?

What if no one wants a tattoo? You will have wasted your money. If someone does want tattoo, are they supposed to hold off on drinking while they wait their turn?

I don't think this is a good idea, for the reasons many of the PPs stated

For the above reasons, I would also not enjoy this. It was also take away from the party because even small tattoos take a while. What about temporary tattoos? They have ones for adults not just kids!

Please invite me 😂 .... I’d get another tattoo (and FH is filled with them).. I like the idea. As long as it’s a professional set up, a private sanitary room and very simple/quick designs, it can work (possibly share the artist's info on your wedding website so that guests can see their work and reviews). Obviously, it’s going to require knowing your guests, and it sounds like yours are fun and open to it. I realize from prior responses that it’s not popular. But you can’t please everyone and far too many weddings are copycat repeat ideas. But, like you, we’re less traditional and have some unconventional wedding plans. So, I appreciate unique ideas. Best wishes!

I’ve seen couples get tattoos at their weddings, never seen it being open to their guest. Only you know your crowd/guest if you think it will go over well with them, I say DO IT!!!!

As a guest, I would pass on that option. I would want to research the artist and read reviews before getting a tattoo.

Personally, no I would not do it as a bride or as a guest. As many above comments have stated, there is a lot of legality and sanitation issues you'll have to go through, there is a high possibility that someone could do it under the influence and be good at hiding it, and tattoos are a time consuming process. If you have the artist for say 2 hours, and each tattoo takes say 15 minutes for a small minimalist tattoo, that means only 8 guests get a tattoo. It doesn't seem like the best use of your time and money for a wedding.

For a bach party or shower on the other hand, that could be a fun idea, since that is a smaller group of people (that you probably know would be into it or not) that can all SOBERLY agree to it pre-event. I would go to the actual tattoo shop not have it at a house though.
