"Tasteful, love-themed, reggae/dancehall music" = oxymoron? I hope not!

Caris, on March 20, 2013 at 3:00 PM Posted in Planning 0 21

FH and I are both of Caribbean descent (Jamaica, Grenada & Guyana), so... you can't have a wedding reception without dancehall music!

Here's my issue... for those of you who know reggae/soca/dancehall/calypso music, most of the songs nowadays are pretty suggestive, or just plain explicit. At any other party I wouldn't mind, but this is my wedding!

I'd like to find music that sets the right tone, and keeps in line with the theme of my wedding, but is still enjoyable and gets people on the dance floor! Has anyone already conquered this battle? Please help!!!

Caris, so as long as you find a good experienced DJ you should be fine. The greatest DJ's know just how to set the tone and still throw a good party. BTW I LOVE Soca and Dancehall. We will have some played at our reception too

Oh yeah that IS the DJ's job isn't it? I've been "wearing too many hats", I need a vacation, lol. I literally JUST started working with a DJ; before that I was trying my best to put together a music playlist. Thanks Marlina!

We'llAlwaysHaveParis, slightly suggestive is fine lol but those songs would be in the minority!

Find out if your DJ has a subscription to one of the DJ pools (Promo Only, Top Hits, Prime Cuts). They usually have "edited" versions of the music.

I agree with the DJ comment. A good one will know how to handle the music for you. I am from Caribbean descent as well (Jamaica and Trinidad) so I know EXACTLY what you are referring to in the music. LOL!

I'd suggest almost anything from Beres Hammond! He's a legend and always smooth!

I second Beres Hammond! I also would add Sizzla and Tarrus Riley.
