Taste Testing

Lesley, on February 3, 2015 at 3:49 PM Posted in Planning 0 6

Just curious when you got to try the food for the venue you chose. Was it at your initial consultation or closer to the wedding once you had already booked the venue? I am not familiar with the general timeline, but a prospective venue informed me that I won’t be able to do a taste test until 2 months prior to the wedding. Is that the industry norm?

We did our tasting about 5 months before the wedding, which I think is more standard, although it might depend on whether you're doing a plated dinner or buffet. We are doing a pre-selected plated meal, so we needed to know in advance to have it printed on the RSVP cards.

My fiancé and I refused to move forward with any place that wouldn't give us a tasting before signing a contract. My fiancé is a picky eater so he wanted to know the food was great and I wanted to see how it looked, their service, and hoe organized and thoughtful they were. Most did have a cost but we were fine with that as it was labor and food so kinda like a dinner out. Most places will accommodate if you ask at least that was our experience. Never was it an option at the initial site visit though and I wouldn't have wanted that. I had too many questing a for them to be busy eating.

My venue does it 2 mos prior, however, they will do it earlier if you are offering a pre-plated meal option. We are offering 3 options.

Yeah no I wouldn't do it. There are two things that can't go wrong at my wedding. My ceremony and my food.

All the venues I attended only offered tastings after the booking. There were a few open houses I went to that passed around appetizers or food they were thinking about adding to the menu, but not like a real tasting. We will get to taste our food 4-5 months prior to our wedding. We just have to schedule a time.

We booked our venue in early September and our tasting is Feb. 11! That's between 5-6 months before our wedding.
