Taste Testing prior to selecting a location and/or caterer?

SMCA_Osborne, on January 13, 2010 at 5:19 PM Posted in Planning 0 12

My FH is a huge foody!!! and I am rather picky too - had anyone taste-tested/sampled food from a location (one that does NOT allow outside catering) prior to signing the contract? I don't want to fall in love with an event space & the food not live up to our expectations. Since food preferances are sooo personal, reviews really can't be too much help.

We chose a place that my FH's boss had his wedding at. My family also went to several functions there so we knew the food was good.

You can always try to ask them to sample the food they have. The place I booked is always having one party or another so they always have food.

I'm a total foodie and I also have diet/allergy restrictions. So, we picked a place based on menu options and how flexible they would be with my diet. And, we did a tasting, too... fab food. I'm very thankful that the reception venue had the perfect caterer available - made my life easy. They do allow outside caterers for a fee though. Wonder if your potential venue does that?

Yes definitely try the food before signing a contract and make sure you know what is on the contract.

Ask your vendors! You'd be surprised at how much they can tell you about other vendors. Just ask around! See who they would recommend. Try and look at some web sites and see what they offer before you even talk to th Some places charge for a tasting and some have on-going monthly or weekly tastings for free. sometimes places that don't usually allow outside vendors will allow it if you have specific religious codes or allergies that they don't accommodate. Just ask. And remember: YOU'RE the boss. You're hiring THEM for their services. It's YOUR way or the highway. Smiley smile I'd kick them to the curb if I don't get what I want and I'd find someone else. Sounds mean but I'm not going to buy a dress that doesn't fit either. Why pay for food I can't eat? It's the same thing.

And DEMAND a full quote and keep it and make sure it's the same at the wedding as well. Sometimes vendors "forget" to include things in the quote and people are left with some major unexpected fees and some very angry brides

FH and I were invited to a complimentary tasting at the holiday inn. We accepted and went. There was appetizers to try, which were ok, some were not so great but i said to myself, when it comes time to choose things like this, we'd just not choose some of those. I made notes on napkins, LOL. Then food came out: rib eye grilled & sliced, medium well, & chicken picatta w/the pickled capers and lemon/butter sauce, grilled veggies. I am NOT a fan of capers, never have been, so i only took a nibble of the chicken but it was good! And the steak was AWESOME! They even served us red and white wine, our choice of either or both if wanted, lol. I drank water tho. Then they bought out a dessert platter. Choc. covered strawberries and canolis which were AWESOME! Then we looked @ the place my mom loved. We asked abt tasting, he said "If you book with us, sure, we can do a tasting" I was like, HAHAHAH no. We booked holiday inn. Great food & great price. Smiley smile Good luck, and always taste~!

We had a complimentary food tasting. They gave us a menu and we got to pick what we wanted to taste. They gave us 2 sheet cakes for teh 2 different flavors we wanted to try and enough food that us and our 4 parents ate it for lunch. definitely try and taste the food first. you want to make sure the food is delicous before booking the venue.

We've been to an event before at our location so we knew the food was decent. I would def want to do a tasting prior to booking if I hadn't had the food before.

Usually they want you to come see the venue first and if you love it and considering booking it then you can ask for a private tasting. I wouldn't go with a place that doesn't allow outside catering AND wouldn't do tasting.
