Tanzanite or Sunstone

Mackenzy, on August 17, 2019 at 4:54 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 13
Hello! I am torn between asking for a Tanzanite or Sunstone engagement ring. One jeweler that I have fallen in love with is Alexis Russell. However, I have been reading some very unhappy reviews about her pieces. Does anyone know where I can find a Tanzanite or Sunstone ring that is worth the money? How do you all feel about Alexis Russell? Thank you for your help!!

I don’t know of the designer but I love tanzanite, it’s becoming a popular choice for engagement rings or wedding ring side stones now. There’s a ton of them on Etsy under $1000 that I’ve looked at. I don’t know many sunstone rings.

The reason sunstone and tanzanite may be getting bad reviews is that they are relatively soft stones. This means over the course of even a few years the facet lines may start to appear burnished or the facets may look scratched and very worn down with daily wear. As a jeweler we cautioned against the use of sunstone or tanzanite due to these qualities. They are not good stones for daily wear. If you don't mind getting your stone recut every few years I would find a private AGS accredited jeweler and order a larger stone (having the stone recut means that every few years you'll lose carats/weight) and have it set in bezel (protective of girdle).

    Good luck!

Thank you so much for your help! I know for sure that I would like a unique gemstone ring! However I don’t know what gemstones are good for rings and where to find them!

OMG there are so many options out there!
Okay, as a rule of thumb I generally would pick a gemstone that is around 7.5 or higher on the Mohs scale (a hardness scale). Some popular stones that fall in that category would be corundums (ruby, emerald, sapphire [there's SO many different color sapphires out there so you can really go nuts. like yellow sapphires are ridiculously gorgeous! i custom designed a piece for my cousin with pink sapphires in the band and she loves it!]), topazes (these, too, come in a huge range of colors [blue, green, yellow, orange, purple]).

Gemvara is a great place to start online or you can walk into a place like Helzberg Diamonds or Tiffany (chain retailers that are AGS certified) to help you build a custom piece. Lots of small private jewelers are AGS certified too

Thank you so much for your help! I am going into this completely blind so it is extremely helpful to have someone break down all the ins and outs for me! Is there anyway to make a Tanzanite ring stronger? I have attached a picture of the Tanzanite ring that I have been looking at recently. But I am hoping to find something that I love just as much very soon!

I've always loved Tanzanites. Never thought of this stone as an option. Good Luck!

Woah that’s a super green tanzanite (or my phone display is super off). Are you looking to get the whole set or just the pear ring in the middle?

I think as of right now the pear ring and the baguette diamond open cuff for the engagement ring! I’m not quite sure about a wedding band yet. Possibly the diamond sunburst on top!

My stone is a sapphire! FH got it from the Natural Sapphire Company and had a local jeweler custom set it. But Natural Sapphire Co does settings and custom orders and there are sooooo many beautiful stones to look at.

My mom has a beautiful Tanzanite ring my dad brought back from Tanzania for her years ago. I may wear it as my "something blue". Tanzanite is beautiful, but it's a soft stone so it's not meant for everyday use. My mom wore it for just a few months straight, and it started getting a little damaged so she only wears it on special occasions now. The ring you took a screenshot of is really pretty, but I've never seen tanzanite look that green. It's usually a purple-ish blue color.

Thank you everyone for your help! It sounds like even though I love the Tanzanite ring it is not appropriate for an every day kind of ring! I’m assuming sunstone is the same! Does anyone know anything about rutilated quartz?!

Hey Mackenzy! Have you gotten your engagement ring yet? What stone did you decide to go for?
