Tanning related. Is this a sign of a problem?

C2ShiningC, on April 1, 2011 at 9:08 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 9

I went tanning (in a bed) for the first time on Wed. I know it's unhealthy, please don't lecture me about the dangers of tanning, cancer, etc. I'm making a one time exception and would normally never do it.

Here's my dilema: I went in the bed for 8 min. Normally, I tan fairly well and only really burn if I skip sunblock or fail to reapply it timely. Well, I got some very mild sunburn on my back. . . IN THE SHAPE OF THE BULBS IN THE BED!!!!! Seriously, I have stripes. The burn has already faded to a light tan and it wasn't badly burnt initially, just pink. FS says now it's barely noticeable. So for now I'm ok but should I be concerned about the salon? The owner says he changes the bulbs regularly and everything seemed clean and on the up and up. I bought a few sessions but I don't want to keep going if this is a big sign of a problem. Will I even out? Did I do something wrong? Can anyone offer any advice?

I don't think you have a problem. I have been tanning too for a boudoir shoot, and although I haven't experienced the Bulb lines, I have seen others who have and they tend to fade and the more you tan, you won't see them... hopefully :/

I have never used one myself (most likely for similar reasons as you, but I have always been told that the first time go for 2 minutes, then as you go more frequently slowly increase it so your skin can adjust. I never tan I always burn. Beds are "concentrated" sun rays, if you will, and I am sure that your skin will even out over time just once the burn is gone and you have some tan color left go in small doses.

im not all in the tanning bed thing either but I plan to do it closer to my wedding day

The bulbs are probably new and will burn you a lot faster. I have had the bulb tan line before. What I normally do is midway through my time I kinda slide over a touch so the bulbs aren't directly hitting that one part of my body.

I used to go tanning alot in my younger days and yes if you went in it for too long the first time, you are more than likely to see the bulb lines. They will fade over time.

I started to go again this week so I don't look pasty in my ivory dress. I started with only 7 minutes and the second time I went 10. I have had no issues.

I always tan in the winter cause I have psoresis...But you most likely got bulb line from new bulbs. They will fade and you will get more even the more often you go. Tanning salons have to pass state inspection so I would not be too worried especially if tanning is the only service they offer.

Thanks ladies! I feel much better hearing this! My burn has faded but I was worried about going back for fear of something the salon was doing or not doing with their beds. I'm thinking 6 mins would have been better but too late now Smiley smile I have another appt tomorrow so I'm going to make sure I move around more in the bed and maybe I'll drop down a couple minutes too.

@Jamie - My budiour shoot is Wed and I was already trying to figure out what poses we can do so my striped back wouldn't show. I didn't give my shoot enough thought when I started planning the whole tanning thing Smiley tongue

@FutureMrsWells - That's so good to know! I had no idea about the state inspections. Tanning is the only thing the salon I'm going to does so this is fantastic news!

I used to go tanning back in high school. That was the thing to do! I noticed that in a tanning bed I got a much different tan than if I went in a tanning booth where you stand up. When I would lay down, I wouldn't tan on my shoulder blades and on a couple spots on my backbone that touched the bed when I laid down which was really not very attractive. I suggest trying a booth where you stand up next time to see if that is any different for you.

I always moved around while I was in there. Balance on my shoulder blades and arch my back, raise my arms to get arm pits. Sometimes I would even flip and lay on my stomach. Also, if they have a stand up try to do that every 3 times or so.
