Tanning Nightmare!!

Stacy06168, on August 7, 2009 at 10:49 PM Posted in Planning 0 15

So I still have 2 months until my weedding, however I started tanning so that I wouldn't burn in Las Vegas. So anyway I have been to the tanner 4 times. The first time they put me in a bed that was messed up, and I got striped burned in to my back, and now today I looked at my back and I have splotches on my back and hives. I'm so frustrated!!! I have no idea why I have hives and splotches, I don't know what to do, I need a tan before Vegas so I don't burn, but I don't want hives. Well just wanted to vent and see if anyone had any suggestions on what I should do.

Were you using a tanning lotion? If so, you may need to switch lotions. If not, the tanning bed may not have been properly cleaned - which might be the cause of your hives. I worked at a tanning bed, and after every client, we went in and cleaned the beds. The next time you go make sure they clean the beds.

I am thinking of changing the lotion, because I have used the hex for 2 of the 4 days. I just hate the fact that I have to go have my dress fitted tomorrow and my back looks terrible.

Im sorry!!! i would think hte salon you were at might have not cleaned the bed very well or you were allergic to the cleaning product that they used for the bed cuz it the hives are just on your back right? i think the striping came from the lotion you used-some do that (i recommend "black" it works really good!) i wouldn't go to that salon till you find out exactly what the allergic reaction came from-try another salon after you recover from your hives and that should make a complete difference Smiley smile

I know some people get hives from being stressed, especially in the summer. If it were from the lotion it would be all over you, not just on your back. So if thats the case I doubt its from the lotion. Talk to the manager and see what product they are using to clean the beds.

Definately sounds like you are allergic to their cleaning products. The striping could have come from the owners rotating some of the bulbs, makeing some stronger than others (not a good practice). I suggest finding another salon. Make sure that you find a good one (yelp?) where you can tell the employees your issues and they can help. For the hives (which i get a lot, they are an allergic reation) take 2 benadryl before bed until they go way. Good luck!

Do you usually tan well? The tanning just might be too much for your skin. Have you been tanning before?

How often are you going? because if you go too fredquently, that could be causing it too.

I tan everyday. I had an allergic reaction to the cleaning solution, My salon wipes the cleaner off with water when I come in. If you are still getting stripes try a stand up bed. What level bed are you using? Try a level two bed for shorter periods of time, you actually burn less than if you are in a level 1 bed. Level 2 beds have higher levels of UVA rays which will help you get darker faster and with less burning. Hope that helps, dont be afraid to tell the people at the salon what is happening they will help you and answer any questions you have.

You should be using the stand up beds. I wouldn't let my skin touch those beds they never clean them. they are full of MSRA!

I am going every other day, but I have skipped two days this time. Ususally I do tan fairly easily, and I have tanned before with the same lotion that I am using and never had a problem, but the hives seem to be going away and hopefully it is cleared up by next sunday for my bridal shower. Thank you so much for all of the help.

Try Salsum Blue Shampoo to remove the blotches. I am not sure if it will help with the hives. When I went tanning at a salon I got blotches and the Doctor said it's a parasite on the bulbs that feeds off of skin..it didn't kill me or anything just gave me blotches on my back. I used the Salsum blue on my back the blotches disappeared in about a week. Good Luck!

Sounds like a reaction to the cleaning solution. Some lotions, especially if they are concidered "high heat", or have the words, "tingle", or "reddening" may have cause the splotches...as for the hives, if the bed wasn't cleaned very well, and some companies do not clean their beds well, and some even let the clients clean them, that could be it. Also, if it wasn't cleaned well, and someone was using a lotion you've never used before, or even have, it could cause a reaction (mixing the lotions) especially if they both were for advanced tanners and have the "tingleing" touch to it.

I'm fair skinned but end up with tan lines from day to day time in the sun (I'm prone to the farmers tan). Since my dress is strapless I'm going to have a spray tan done to even out my color. I'd look into that option if the tanning beds have so many reactions for you. Just make sure you use a high quality sunblock for the days leading up to your wedding to avoid burning.

The lower level beds are more likely to cause striping or the "bunny tail" (big white spot above your butt crack) try a higher quality bed maybe? Agree w/ all pp's about the cleaner or lack there of.... I have worked in a tanning salon before and just to be safe I always take my own antibacterial wipes (I have checked w/ salon to make sure they aern't harmfull to their machinery) and wipe off my machine before I lay down... You can never be too safe!
