Tanning Bed and Rings

CountryRoads, on July 27, 2018 at 9:47 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 15

Is there any reason that I should NOT wear my ring in the tanning bed other than tan lines. I cant think of any, but wanted to make sure it wont damage the ring.

It shouldn't hurt it! Check with the jewelry store just in case.

I feel like it might get hot on your finger? When I tan it gets super hot in there so I’d just be careful.

I wouldn’t wear it. Lotion and heat can cause damage. Your jeweler would tell you to take it off. I always take mine off to avoided any lotion or heat damage.

I always keep mine on 😬. I should probably take it off to keep it from getting damaged. But to answer the question about it getting hot, it does not get hot

The tanning bed itself shouldn't damage your ring but if you use lotion it would gunk up your ring. I personally would take it off to put the lotion on and while tanning then put it back on afterwards that way the lotion has time to soak in. I always leave my rings off for a while after using lotion. I used to work in a jewelry store and it would gross me out when people would bring in jewelry to be cleaned and it was caked with lotion.

I’m sorry for the unsolicited advice, but hopefully you aren’t using tanning beds too much. They are dangerous and can cause cancer. Smiley sad Sorry again, I just think it’s a very serious and scary subject since both of my parents are cancer survivors (not skin cancer, but other types), and I personally think advoiding anything that is known to cause cancer is best. Spray tans are safe.

Tanning beds and lotion wont damage your ring. Tanning beds will damage your skin though!

If in moderation it should be fine. I’m tanning slightly (outdoors) as well but because I have terrible skin. I have eczema and KP. UV clears it up so my guests aren’t disgusted with my imperfections. I’m not getting bronzed as I like the look of my fair complexion in my dress. Spray tans can rub off and ruin the inside of the dresses which is why some brides are hesitant to go that route. Hope your parents stay in remission though. That time must have been so hard on you.

To the OP, I wouldn’t wear jewelry to tan. That jewelry will get so gunked up with lotion.

I am going for the same reason: eczema [which is currently out of control on my face]! I have never heard anyone else say that it helped them, I just figured out in college that it helps me when it is super flared and painful. I appreciate the validation!! Nice to know I am not alone.

LOL. I did try spray tan once... based on that experience spray tan + eczema = HOT MESS. Not only did I have a reaction to it, I looked like a leopard with spots because of my skin textures. Never again.

For the record I dont go year round. Only to build up a base tan so I dont burn in the summers or to control a flare up.

I’m going to further validate your belief about tanning helping eczema by informing you that there is a treatment that dermatologist can prescribe. It’s called phototherapy which uses UVB. My eczema doesn’t respond to most topical treatments which is frustrating since my doctor just wants to try an even stronger topical steroid. The steroids help but my eczema will come back even angrier than before as soon as I stop, which sucks when it's widespread like mine. Sunlight is free and I just need to sit out for maybe 30 minutes total a week in the late afternoon when the UV index is about 4. 😄

Are you KIDDING me!!! WOW! Thank you! You have no idea the validation you just gave me.

In college I told my dermatologist that I had discovered that the tanning bed helped my eczema, and that man told me very judgmentally "NO! That's all in your head because you want an excuse to go tanning". Obviously I dismissed his opinion, because I knew it worked, and it has continued to work time after time!! All this time I figured maybe I was just an odd ball. I have certainly never brought it up to another dermatologist, and no-one has talked to me about it. Steroids yes, which helps and is my only saving grace when it flares. Recently a biopsy of my face was suggested [4 months before the wedding nonetheless], not because there was any doubt that it is eczema, but just because "[we] have not had my face biopsied yet...". Seriously, that was the explanation.

Thank you for sharing this. Truly!! This was much more helpful than you may have intended. LOL

I’m so glad I was able to help! 😄

Now that you’re aware of the treatment option, you could discuss with your doctor to see if it’ll work for you. It has it’s risks and is time consuming. It’ll be way more effective through a doctor though. He may discourage it if the conventional drugs are working for you so be aware of that.
