Taller than the average bride?

Aubrey, on November 26, 2019 at 11:39 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 10

I'm getting pretty frustrated. Many people struggle to find a dress they know is "the one", but I have seen plenty that I would love to wear but they aren't offered with extra length. Why is that? The max length I have seen is 64" (hollow to hem) but it was way above my price range, and I'd guess pretty high relative to the average bridal gown budget. The regular length gown at David's Bridal is 60"-61", and there are dresses with extra length but are still not long enough - and I'm not even planning to wear heels.

I know Azazie and other online stores do custom sizes, but I haven't found any dresses that are my style.

I found a website that was apparently dedicated to tall brides, but all their dresses were tea- or midi-length. That is NOT the same thing.

For a day that I badly want to feel feminine, I'm afraid I'll have to settle for a dress I don't love and for a price I can't afford just to have a dress that fits. I just don't understand why this is so hard to find, and I feel so left out that I have to be so guarded when I browse dresses online for fear that I'll find one I love just to find out it doesn't come in my length.

Is anyone else having this frustration? I just need to feel like I'm not alone.

Perhaps you could look into finding a seamstress who can make a dress for you? Or there's Anomalie, which does custom dresses as well. I don't know what your budget is, but that could be a way to get a dress that is long enough, but is also one that you actually love.

Unfortunately, lots of dress designers don't do lots of dresses in extra-length because more fabric costs more money for them to make the dress. I would look into Anomalie as Erin said because they do custom dresses. See if they can make you a dress that'll be long enough for you, or even look into seeing if a local seamstress can design a dress for you! I hope you're able to find a beautiful dress you love

I am not tall but I am busty. And not very think anywhere else.

I’m going to offer the suggestion that you find a seamstress and take her images of the gowns you Love. See what she/he would charge for making a gown for you...
Best of luck and I am soooo sorry you are going through this.

I feel you to my core! I am 6' and my biggest wish was to find a dress that actually touched the floor for the first time in my life. I turned to Amazon and had a dress custom made for my size and height. I took a huge gamble, but for $100 felt it was worth it. My gamble paid off. It can be done, but it took me months of searching. I also knew right away that David's was not the place for me, they were terrible. There was one bridal shop in my area that actually had long dresses, but of course it was above my budget. I wish you luck on your search.

I am tall, but only at the edge of where I would need extra length. I actually decided on a tea length dress. It has a ball gown type skirt, so it’s still very girly and feminine. However something I’ve done in the past is to get a larger dress than what I need and have it altered down to my size. This will sometimes give you a little more length depending on the style of dress. Another option is to find separates. Everyone’s body type is different, so you may find a bridal skirt that is long enough easier than a dress. You can always have a skirt and top sewn together to give it a fluid dress look as well. I wish you luck!

I have the opposite problem-I wish I could have donated you fabric from mine! I had to have it cut short so that the lace pattern wouldn't be cut in alterations!

Separates is a great idea! Martina Liana does separates that you basically can't tell they aren't one dress. I'm not sure what your budget is but you can also find a lot of the pieces on stillwhite.com and other dress for sale sites.

How tall are you? Designer dresses tend to have longer torsos and lengths to accommodate more model-like figures (and because it's far easier to shorten straps and remove fabric than it is to add it), so if you are planning to wear flats I would think that a 64" hollow to hem length would work on at least some styles unless you are much taller than 6 feet. Have you actually tried on any of the taller dresses yet, or are you just comparing measurements online at this point? I'm a pretty average height but have a long torso so more fitted designs off the rack rarely work for me because the hips usually hit me too high and I have a weird bubble of fabric over my butt. I was pleasantly surprised that wedding dresses fit my proportions better than I expected because of the "long" standard that is more typical on wedding dresses than regular ready-to-wear styles. It might be worth just trying on some of the longer dresses to see where that measurement falls on you and if it works at all.

You may want to look into companies that offer "bespoke" or "custom" dresses (Jarlo London comes to mind for bespoke creations and Anomalie for custom) or on Etsy where you can order dresses from designers using custom measurements.

Also, I definitely recommend checking out StillWhite or other pre-owned wedding dress sites. Some even let you search by height. You may be able to find a longer dress that was well outside your budget new, but suddenly becomes affordable when you buy it pre-owned. New, my dress was more than double my budget and I wouldn't have even considered trying it on in a store, but what I ended up paying was only 1/6th of the new price and overall I spent a lot less on my wedding dress than I expected to.
