Talk to me about extensions!

Kendall, on February 7, 2019 at 2:28 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 20
So I am 100% getting hair extensions for my wedding. I had planned on getting fusion extensions but after talking to my stylist I’m leaning towards tape in. This is my first time getting extensions other than clip ins so I’d love to hear your stories with pros and cons of each and brownie points for before and after picturesSmiley smile

I'd check out Milk & Blush, those are the kind I'm getting! One of my bridesmaids has them and loves them. They are clip in!

I'm definitely doing extensions as well just wasn't sure what the best route to go was. I think I'm going to opt for bonded extensions but I am very interested to see what everyone else has to say about this.

Yay! They will look awesome. I originally wanted fused or sew in, but I wash my hair everyday and I knew the extensions couldn't take that Smiley sad but I wish I could do them! Having them for the honeymoon would be so nice.

Decent ones go for around $200. I love clip ins and have worn them for years but I want a more semi perminent for the wedding so they’ll last through the honeymoon.

I responded to a post here yesterday about a extensions and gave an overview on the types. Sounds like you know them, but maybe to help others. I also have some personal opinions in there about them that I hope help.

In short, my personal opinion and experience, and comments from many hair stylists, get the keratin/ fusion bond, or the I-link. Better for your scalp. And they will look better. I personally don't like the tape in at all. If you do the long strip you can always see the bump from it. the smaller strips are better, but you still can't pull your hair back in a pony tail.

    Here's my normal hair:

    Here's with clip-ins:

(I think these give a ton more volume for me personally, b/c I have a small head and fine thin hair)

    Here's with keratin bonds:

Personally, I love the clip in for the versatility and ability to take them out to workout, and they give me more volume. I am just always worried someone will see them or they'll slip out (which is just a paranoia, never been a problem to my knowledge). I love the bonded ones b/c you really can't see them, they look more natural for me and my hair styles always work better with them.

    Hope that helps!

If you want to curl them, you'll want human hair. I'd budget for $100-$300 and do a lot of research. I'm paying around $225.

I got fusion extensions because that is all my thin hair could hold. I mostly needed them to achieve the up-do of my wedding dreams since I couldn't do much with my natural hair.

    Before and after application:

Talk to me about extensions! 4

My stylist ordered 5 packs of the Babe Hair Extensions and it took her 8 hours to put all 5 packs in, keep in mind she doesn't do this often and she knew it was for my wedding so she tried to make it perfect. We put these in about 2 months before the wedding (they typically last a few months) so I could get used to them and we could play with them. I did 2 trials with them in of her playing with my hair, we also put more in as some did fall out.

Don't mind the ugly duck face, took this for my mom and now I'm putting it on the internet, lol!

On the wedding day, we used a halo of the same colored hair to create more of a bun than what the extensions would allow. Honestly, I was in love with my hair and never felt more beautiful. I would 100% spend the money and time again to look the way I did.

Pros to the fusions: They stay in for up to 3-4 months before needing to be fixed or taken out. They really do feel like your natural hair and look great when styled properly. I got a ton of compliments. I loved that I could wear them for the month before the wedding and it felt good to have more hair to work with. I loved them so much my stylist actually bought more and we are putting some in this coming weekend! Also, it helped my natural hair to grow because I trained it not to need washed so much and kept a lot of heat off of my natural hair.

Cons: The price (like most extensions) was expensive. I paid about $500 total from buying the hair to having it applied. I bought 2 more packs for $150 this week. It isn't cheap. After they were first put in, I had a headache for 2 days. I wasn't used to having the pulling feeling at first but it definitely went away. It also felt weird to sleep for about a week. They gave me a hair brush specifically for the extensions, but brushing my hair was weird at first too. Its not easy to style everyday. I have to blow dry my hair because you cannot leave the bonds wet too long. This takes longer with all of the fake hair so I get up for work earlier than normal. Lastly, they do fall out here and there. They will get pulled on too much and some will come out, it really freaked me out at first and I was super nervous but I just saved the hair and we put them all back in when I went back.

Overall, I think any form of extension requires extra care and money so I can't complain there. I am so happy with the confidence it gave me and how I felt on my wedding day. That was worth everything.

I like the remy human hair. I've found Donna Bella to be a fair price point: https://donnabellahair.com/collections/hair-extensions-catalog-full-head-clip-in-hair-extensions-23-1-html

I also have fine thin hair so I don't need super heavy (I usually get the 160g and only use half) so I could probably do 100g in other brands.

Thank you! I'll check those out. One of my bridesmaids uses milk & blush, and they always look amazing on her. As of right now, I plan on ordering the 24"-26" superior extensions in Bel Air. They are 220g. They come in 10 wefts. My hair is fine/thin from so much bleaching but I feel like after a year+ of expensive hair care it's improved. I wish I could try them first to make sure they aren't too heavy, before spending $225. I'll check out Donna Bella too though! I also need to legitimately measure what 26" looks like to make sure they aren't much longer than my normal hair since I'm going more for fullness.

My stylist recommended tape-in extensions. Over about 9 months I grew my hair out as much as possible and went from dark brown/blue hair to blond. The extensions helped with color and length/fullness which held in curls.

Tip: get extensions 10-14 days before your wedding to remove or adjust as necessary (two up high showed through a part so I had them removed). I kept them in for 5 weeks total.

Look into hand tied extensions, or even micro beaded extensions. They are easier to adjust/move up.

Me too!!!! Long story short - I lost A LOT of my hair last year because of an autoimmune condition and it's almost shoulder length again. But I am used to having looooong hair. So I am going in for a consultation this Saturday. SoOoOo nervous. I am planning to go for tape-ins because I read that those are they most gentle on your hair. Any one know what I can expect from the consultation? TIA!

Have you checked into luxy hair and bellami hair? I am not so sure with fine AND thin hair if you should put all that weight on it. Bellami is used by tons of youtubers etc! Length is fine but that's a heavy weight and could damage your hair/break it! I mean you don't have to use all the wefts I am just pointing out from things I have read. Bellami has a sale right now and they have 160g. I have little hair so I don't wanna risk too much weight on it.

I'll have to check out Donna Bella too! I was looking into luxy and bellami. My problem is picking a blonde that I can dye red since I have been dying my hair red for at least 3 years now but my natural color is brown. From the two I emailed one said ash blonde the other said strawberry blonde so I have no clue Smiley amazing

You can also order color swatches for $2 each at donna bella and see if you can get lucky on the red! I have been able to find a brown that matches perfectly, but for more dimension my hair stylist does a shade difference. Here's the link and they're $2 each: https://donnabellahair.com/collections/hair-extensions-color-swatches

Thank you! It seriously looked so real, and even looking at myself in the mirror i couldn't stop staring at my hair! I loved them, and I really only spent the money for the wedding but I was so nervous to do it (haven't changed my hair in years, not even color) but honestly would take the leap again!
