Take photos before or after ceremony?

Amanda, on March 6, 2016 at 4:50 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 13

I have always planned on not having my FH see me in my dress before the wedding ceremony (I'm fine if we see each other before we get ready, before I'm in my dress) because I really want that first look to be special and uncensored. But my mom has recently urged me to take photos beforehand. She said, "when I got married, I didn't know you could do take photos before the ceremony, but I wish I had because it would have made things easier." But we're planning on having a cocktail hour, which is when we would take our wedding photos. What did you guys do at your wedding, and was it any less stressful having your photos taken during cocktail hour or before the wedding?

FYI: I think those first-look photos where the bride walks up behind the groom and taps him on the shoulder are so different from a first-look of your bride walking down the aisle, so I wouldn't want to do that.

We are doing a first look and majority of the WP pics before the ceremony. After the ceremony we are doing family pics, during the cocktail hour.

Totally personal preference. And either way, I think the picture time is just going to fly by so fast.

I am doing the first look because I want to go off the venue site for pictures and we just have the cocktail hour. Also, it seems exciting to share that moment together before the big ceremony.

I completely understand the other way around there, just do what you think is best!

ETA: Also my cocktail hour food is amazing, and I don't want to miss that shit.

We're doing as many pictures as possible before the wedding. Honestly, an hour probably isn't enough time and our wedding and reception are in the same place so it'd be weird if we just left for an hour right after the wedding ceremony.

You're having a winter wedding, so keep in mind it's going to get dark a lot earlier, which means that if you want outdoor shots, you MUST have an afternoon wedding if you don't do a first look.

We are not doing a first look. But we are going to get as many photos done before the ceremony. Flower girls & ring bear, The guys, and the girls.

My photographer got all the bridesmaid/bride and groomsmen/groom pictures out of the way pre ceremony so all we had to do was take family pictures and bridal party pictures. We were even able to get some pictures outdoors. We didn't do a first look either.

3 of my 4 girls did first looks and I really think it is brilliant. They also got a few minutes alone with each other right after the first look that they would have otherwise not gotten at all on their wedding day.

We are doing a first look. Our ceremony isn't until 6pm it'd be silly to waste perfectly nice sunlight to do pics after ceremony and miss the cocktail hour when we could be mingling with our guests. Most brides on here that have done a first look say it was one of their favorite parts of the day! I can't wait for it!

I'm doing a first look. I look forward to having those private moments with my FH. Many on here have posted that it's the only time they were actually able to get alone. I think it will be nice to have that moment of first seeing each other be just between us (and our photog to capture the expression). I think there will still be a special moment when FH sees me at the other end of the aisle. That moment is the moment of "OMG, everything we've built up to over the past year and change is here."
